Fuel tank capacities / compatibilities…
« on: August 29, 2021, 06:35:36 »
Hi to all

I wonder if i’ll keep my oem (possibly rusty) fuel tank… repare it or swap it for a new one.
I saw different capacities (up to 92L) and was questioning wether it could fit my 1965 230 SL ?

The spare tire is horizontal for further precision…

Thanks for your hints 👍👍

As far as I know all 230 SL's were initially fitted with a 65 liter fuel tank. I fitted a 82 liter tank from a 280 SL into my 1965 230 SL whilst refurbishing the 65 liter tank.  The 82 liter tank fitted perfectly, but one has to move the electric fuel pump more to the left hand side for the 82 liter tank to fit.  This required a special bracket for the fuel pump.
I seldom do trips longer than 400 Km and therefor prefer a 65 liter tank as I like to refill my tank frequently to prevent the tank from rusting.

From the parts list: the trunk floor and fuel pump arrangement were changed as of chassis 7205 for 113042. Bu the bigger fuel tank started being fitted when 250SL was introduced.

I do not know this for sure (other Members will know), but it seems that for VIN over 7204 (there were just two cars that were exceptions) you may not need to re-arrange the fuel supply, just fit the tank maybe. Worth checking.

Still, please check it on the car. The types of fuel pumps covers as well as fuel lines routing were discussed on the forum - I have a hard time to search on the phone to provide links, but it is there.
I see parts for fuel supply and parts for spare wheel location changed at the same chassis number, which would suggest - if you have a spare wheel in horizontal position on the right hand side - fuel supply is changed too, but hell knows... Sometimes we see these changes might not have been done as accurately as the available documentation suggests...
