Key making for 1970 Pagoda
« on: November 05, 2021, 19:38:44 »
I see several posts related to replacing keys, but none seem to agree with my local Euro shop that I can simply take my single set of old technology keys to a key maker for spares. Is that possible?

It is. I did that. They may not have the blanks immediately or they may have an issue finding blanks. But it is possible.

I had it even easier back in Holland, I went to a regular small keymaker shop, he read the code off the old key, and then told his machine to make the new one using just the code. This was for my '69 280 SL and about 20 years ago now, so not sure these machines still have that information stored.

The key for my 1970 280SL has the flimsy rubber key head. I only have the one key and for this car it fits into the locks either way whereas older keys only went in one way.  I was noodling around in our favorite (ha!) auction site and found the attached chart. Seller is klassickeyz.

You can buy blanks from them, probably take it to any hardware store and have them cut it for you. I ended up buying a different product which was two metal halves that screw together with tiny Allen grubs that become the new key head but since I only have the one key, a new project will be to buy a couple of key blanks and have them cut. No affiliation with the seller but I thought the chart was very helpful.

Ok, I had saved the chart to a word document so it wont let me attach. If you are in the auction site, just go to advanced search and search on that seller. It may take a little while to find the right key blank but its there.

Hope this helps.

I was telling my sales guy at MB that I ordered 2 spare keys for my 280sl and that they arrived rather quickly.  He said that the reason was that for each new car that is built 6 spare keys are made for it.

I found old time practices less easy than today...

One key for each lock make me upset

Does anybody made one key for all ? I mean One key for 2 doors and the trunk and/or the glove box ?
Thanks

Leester,
Would you mind taking a picture of the chart you mentioned and posting it?
I am in the hunt for some spare keys at the moment as well.
Thank you.

Pawell showed one of the charts I had. I finally figured out how to save a document as a pdf so here's the other picture of the single key. According to this picture, there are four variations for keys from 1969 forward.

I see it does not specifically mention that it applies to W113s but it does in my case.

I think we may have it pretty complete then maybe.

You ordered them through your local MB dealership?

I just ordered two keys from the Classic Center (Master and Valet) and they were $24 each

I also have the keys ordered from the dealer for the1970 car. The blanks from the corner key shop are much better quality. The MB ones I received were the separate head and separate core type ones. They fall apart. If you get anything better from the classic center, please kindly provide PNs.

The easiest way is to buy a set of key blanks. There is a place in nyc called the key man. They have everything available .

Thank you Paweł,
I just bought some blanks on e-bay from a guy, called masterslocksmith out of Georgia. He seemed to have a lot of old stock keys.

Pawel, the correct url is keyprof.com.  I have used them and the keys they cut for me work very well.  They use blanks that have the same shape as the originals, but lack any details.  I supplied the key codes from my data card, and they cut the correct keys.  Great to have a backup set.
