Fuel gauge connector

My 230 SL will get a new fuel tank and new fuel gauge.
A connector was missing, there was a very bad connection made.
My question is what type of connector do I need for the fuel gauge?
Is a standard 6-pin connector or another one?
I already found a wire connection thread for it, so that I can use for the connector:

Mine has the regular 4-pin connector

It is a regular 4pin connector. You have all the parts numbers here:

I am not sure about availability, you would just have to order the parts with the dealer to check potential substitutions.

Particularly for fuel sender the history is:
   
A 000 545 32 28 up to chassis 113042 012466
A 015 545 49 28 as of chassis 113042 0 12467

and then there were series of replacement numbers.

One important point: if you had the fuel level sender with float and lever and you replace it with tube type fuel sender, it will not work unless you also replace the gauge in the dash board instruments.

Can the fuel gauge that I have been recognised as the right one for the tube style sender?
I don't know what the earlier owner of my car have been done with the fuel sender, but the wiring looks very amateurishly made.

The fuel sender was changed together with gauge at 113042 10 008953 - this is for manual and 113042 12 013302 - this is for automatic.

Did you see what sender was in the tank?

I cannot think of another way than getting one of them, connecting it and seeing what the gauge is showing... Of course you do not need to do it in the tank, just hook the wires.

Maybe there is another way...

Unfortunately I can't find pics of the fuel sender that was in my car.
My VIN is 113042-10-012817 for my manual 230 SL from 1965, so it seems pretty safe that it has originally been the newer type of fuel sender.

Doing conversion to the old one would be odd, dictated, perhaps, by some money/part availability odd circumstances...

Is there a part number visible on your sending unit?  If not, remove it and post a photo so we know what type you are trying to connect.
