I've got a 69sl that I'm planning on shipping from FL to TX.   Anyone recommend a particular shipper?

Likewise--Intercity shipped my 250SL from NYC to Dallas last year.  A busy time of year right now, so it took longer to get the move scheduled than I'd've liked, but they took good care.

Intercity Lines www.intercitylines.com just brought my 911 to Atlanta from Madison, WI and I've placed the order for them to bring my 280SL from San Diego to Atlanta and ship my 356C, Atlanta to San Diego. Yes, I like their service and the level of comfort I get from them.

While there are several ways to move collector cars around even FedEx Custom Critical http://passport.fedex.com/ (you really should check out that link), many - even the big guys - have routes they do and routes they don't (or don't necessarily want to) do. Just make sure they commit to picking your vehicle up on one truck and leaving it on that truck until it reaches its destination. I remember reading somewhere about a guy shipping a car across the country and it got dropped off part way somewhere in Texas and sat in an outdoor 'holding pen' for like two weeks [:0] before being loaded onto a different truck to head to its final destination.

People like Intercity, FedEx and Horseless Carriage won't do that sort of thing.

This struck me as funny since I just posted the response below.

I just noticed on Brian Peter's site www.motoringinvestments.com that if you click on the Porsche page, the very first listing is a photo of the guy from Intercity Lines bringing my 911 off of their truck about 3 weeks ago (and no, that big Baptist church in the background is not my house - its about 2 blocks from here and as close as they could get).

Brian found that car for me and no, I didn't pay anything close to what they put in the restoration. I've learned over the years, to own the cars you really want....I mean really want.... you either get very lucky like I did on this '73 911S or you bite the financial bullet (as in the case with my 280SL) and restore the car yourself.

In either case if you play it right, you'll win big or you'll win huge. There is just no way to fault ownership of these type cars.

At least thats what I keep telling myself!

Thanks, Ben. The '73 911S wears its original color, Gold Metallic / 8888. A picture of the 356 is attached as is a photo of the engine bay of the 911.

By the way, I got an email from Brian (my restorer) and Intercity is supposed to pick up my 280SL tomorrow or Wednesday to bring it (finally) to me in Atlanta!

well, I must pipe in here.

I had a really lousy experience with intercity, I gave them 6 weeks notice before I needed a car moved, and every week I was told, "oh, yeah, early next week we are picking it up" well, it never happened, my lease had to be turned in, and the new car wasn't here, so I flew to SC and drove it home.

I wouldn't suggest intercity to anyone....I had so many conversations with the higher-ups at intercity, and never any satisfaction.

Intercity picked up my 280Sl in San Diego yesterday, the eighth day after placing the order at which time they told me they would pick up within 10 to 14 days and deliver 5 to 6 days later to Atlanta.

On the other hand, I placed an order for them to pick up my 356 in Atlanta and ship to San Diego 3 weeks ago and it is still sitting here. When I talked to them today they said Atlanta to West Coast is not a route with much demand but promised if they get here with the 280SL and the 356 is still here they will take it then, which is all that really matters to me as I have limited garage space and when one comes, another has to go.

Intercity was selected by Porsche USA as the exclusive carrier of the Carrera GT ($450k ea, thank you) and I get the impression that has had them hustling and pretty booked up recently.

All of that said to warn that, regardless of who you use, if your origination or destination locations are not on their "normal routes" you may be waiting longer than you had hoped. I strongly encourage you to inquire about the specific route and their activity along that route, regardless of who the shipper is.

Thanks for the input.

I found out that my father had shipped it twice w/ Advantage and both times they arrived on the first shipping date.  Once from CA to NH and once from NH to FL.  He'd already contacted and scheduled.

It ships around 5/31 hopefully.

Looking forward to owning a car that I can recall driving almost 20 years ago.

PS: Ed, the color on that 911 is fantastic...  Nice car...
