Tonneau covers & 3rd seats
« on: May 06, 2003, 20:26:08 »
Hello,

Does any have a picture of a 113 with a tonneau cover?  Also, have determined my car came originally with the kinderseat which is does not have now, is a replacement sold by anuyone or can a site/book be located which illustrates the construction well enough to have one built?

Thanks!

FLS,

Would suggest you watch ebay as the kinder seat shows up for sale from time to time.

I do not have a picture of the tonneau cover and would also be interested in seeing this.  I understand that the chrome trim around the soft top cover has studs to hold the cover as well as the chrome along the door.  Don't know how it connects in the front.

Best,

I recall a discussion about the tonneau cover a while back and to my recollection consensus was that it was an aftermarket/DIY addition, never offered from the factory or dealer (like the A/C was). I suppose it would work with the studs/fasteners that are on my boat, for attaching the softtop to the (wood) body.

Hi Franklin (FLS),

Please find enclosed a photo of a W113 with the tonneau cover. It's from the German book "Das Grosse Mercedes-SL-Buch". I don't speak German, but it seems to say that this accessory was not original from the factory. Could some member of the Group translate it, please?

The Pagoda also was famous for the easy manual operation of its soft-top – "the fastest soft-top in the world", as one specialist magazine was to put it. So the tonneau cover only seems to make sense in California versions (w/o soft-top), or Pagodas ordered without soft-top (option 41/5). Do you know another reason for it?

Best regards,

Albert and all, the tonneau photo caption is something like this:

"To the regret of many owners, this never went into series production: a tonneau cover.  All the same, the soft top is so easy to use that one can simply do without it."

Albert,

To answer your last question: My brother-in-law had a Porsche convertible with a tonneau cover, and this cover could be unzipped so that only the driver's seat area was open.  On cold days, driving this way kept all of the heat in the lower part of the cabin, and he was only exposed from the mid-chest up.  He felt it made cold-weather driving with the top down much more enjoyable.

Thanks for the translation George,

the photo caption seems to give support to my previous idea about the usefulness of the tonneau cover in a car with such fantastic soft-top (except for California versions or options 41/5). I didn't know about the heating function of the "single-seater" position of the tonneau -thanks David- (in that photo is really possible to see the zip fastener between the seats)... but I think that heating system of the Pagoda works better than Porsche's (air cooled engines don't work so well with the heating system), and ... the Pagoda is so comfortable, so nice, that you drive it alone very few times  ;) , so I'm still thinking that it's not a very useful accessory for the W113  :)

Probably best to borrow someone's kinderseat and take it to an upholstery shop. Shouldn't be hard to reproduce, not a particularly complex shape, but the real problem may be matching the interior color with the vinyl or leather. Does anyone know if you can buy pieces of vinyl or leather from any of the interior suppliers ?
