I own a daily driver and would at some point of time consider a 'complete restoration'.
Short of grading,could the forum comment on the strengths of the known restorers such as sl-tech, silver star, and like.

There is a car available at oursl.com(66 230sl)restored by 'Pasarelli'
How would he compare with the others mentioned above.

I guess I am asking the question 'Is there the 'mercedes' of all restorers.'

I don't think you'll find a concensus on who the best restorer is.  I've never dealt with restorers, but I would think the following simplistic approch would work:
 - Decided what you want from your restoration.  Are you going to spend $15,000 or $60,000?
 - Once that decidion is made by you then save up the cash.  I would think any restorer would want a large up front cash deposit and would then charge more as the restoration progresses.
 - Call at least a dozen restorers and spend many hours on the phone with each.  I'm not sure what you would talk about, but you've got to develope a relationship with these people.  They need to know what you want and you have to know what they can provide.
 - Once you have a comfort level with 2 or 3 restorers, then go visit them in person a few times each to see their facility and the work they do.
 - At that point, you should feel comfortable giving one business your car and thousands of dollars.

This forum could probably help you build a comprehensive list of restoration shops, including the few you started off with.

I have never used Passerelli but he is a regular contributor here from time to time.  My understadning is that he is a high end restorer with a very good reputation.

A car restored by him is likely done right, cretainly better than what you might find done by a non-mercedes shop.

I bought dress rims on eBay for my 250sl from Mark and was impressed by his price and speedy handling of the deal and his friendly mannner in dealing with me.
My car looks like a million (Aussie) dollars.

As one who HAS gone through this process before, I'd like to add some things here.

1)  It is unlikely you will be able to spend "hours" on the phone with any one restorer.  If they are on the phone they are not restoring and time is money.

2)  It is helpful but not necessary to have the car close enough to you that you can check up on it now and then.  Pictures are great but sometimes you need to see the car in the metal.  I took about 4 trips during the process but should have taken a few more.

3)  Every restorer has a style and "MO".  Make sure they fit with your needs.  Some will welcome your input, others won't.  Remember the old sign?  "LABOR RATE $45 hour; $55 hour if you watch; $65 hour if you help"  I saved a lot of money by helping--not by working side by side of course, but by off-loading a lot of the "details" of restoration, such as taking care of sub-assemblies, sourcing parts, etc.

4)  Some restorers operate like lawyers; you give them a retainer (X thousand dollars per month) and you have to keep giving them money.  Is that what you want?

5)  Check references AND work.  My references were dead-nuts accurate in their description.  The work I saw my restorer do, despite the awful backdrop, was excellent.

6)  Some restorers are "over the top".  One of them provided me with a description of the work done on a 113 which included half a page regarding all the meticulous detail required in "restoring" the starter motor, ending up with about 4 hours of labor.  I decided that on sub assemblies like this, a factory rebuilt Bosch starter for $175 is the way to go.  What would you do?  Pay for restoration of a sub assembly or get a factory rebuilt on exchange?

7)  Names are meaningless.  Everyone's heard of Hatch & Sons, and Paul Russel & Company, most have heard of SL-Tech and Bud's Benz, but very few people have heard of Dave Payne, or Precious Metal, which was my restorer.  His dark and dingy shop was in a derelict and scary run down neighborhood of Grand Rapids Michigan.  The building was in need of paint--20 years ago.  The paint booth appeared to be the finest in 1950's technology.  But the work that came out of the shop was very very good, and very very reasonable even 5 years ago.  I discovered him in a google search of Mercedes Parts, which led to K&K Manufacturing, which had a link to Precious Metal (since gone, I'm afraid)  You might find many shops that are similar.  It is all in the hands and eyes of the "director" or restorer.

I don't think it matters which country you are in.. There are good people who do not advertise and bad ones who do. Some are "cowboys" some aren't, but word of mouth is usually a good way to go. You do not have to use somebody who only "does" Mecedes either.

At the end of the day Time is money and restoring takes lots of time. In most cases the amount of money spent of restoring a car is more than it is worth.....
But I suspect for most of us here it's not about the money

Sadly, "family called" and Dave Payne, the man who restored my car, ended up selling his shop, Precious Metal Restoration, and moving to Montana.  Today, he is the body shop manager at Ressler Motors, http://www.resslermotors.com/ in Bozeman, and the 190SL's and 113's (with the occational gull wing)have given way to Chevy's, Cadillacs and Toyotas.  But, business is business--maybe you could persuade him to restore yours.
