oil leak from oil dip stick guide tube
« on: January 28, 2022, 21:01:37 »
I`m still on the hunt for leaks - my latest is a weep of oil from the base of the did stick tube where it enters the block. I gave it a tap in the hope that it would re seal it but this hasn`t seemed to work. Next thought was to remove it and seal it (JB Weld?) but I cannot get it out - help. Is it a tap in fit or does it have a thread?

I think there’s an o-ring that seals it.

Maybe take a look: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=21849.msg155723#msg155723

I went through some of the leaking places when I had a tour around the engine leaks a couple of years ago. Been through alternator support topic (also with the help of Joe and Dan), through some other bolts that protrude the block near the PS pump, PS reservoir support bolt, fuel lines front support bolt, etc.

Early tube may have an O ring but the late one doesn't. Press fitted, so it's in there tighter than you would expect.  I don't normally remove the dipstick tube unless I'm doing an engine bay detail. Only way to remove the tube, is from underneath, with the oil pan removed.

Thanks or all the responses.

So....as the engine is in the car it appears I have 2 options - try and tap (beat!) it further into the hole to try and seal it OR put something around the tube where it enters the block (what, I wonder). The oil isn`t under any pressure but it will look a bit agricultural unfortunately.

BTW, the end of the tube in the block - does it rest against any sort of stop or can it just keep going until tight?

Isn't the tube fitted into the oil pan? I think both styles of tube have depth limits on them. If it isn't in correctly, your oil level may be off.

Use brake cleaner spry, then compressed air, the green thread locker will creep in and seal.

Dan,

I tapped it with a block of hardwood and a hammer and it sounded solid against something so I guess its all the way in so the dip stick should be going all the way down

Harold,

Tell me more about this green thread locker - brand?
