Wednesday evening drive with friends
« on: February 16, 2022, 09:49:12 »
Had a beautiful evening drive for a picnic at Mt Franklin Victoria Australia this evening. Weather around 28c Perfect for an evening drive but watch out for kangaroos on roads!😬

Garry…
Every time I see your car I fall a little more in love with it.  The color combo speaks to convertible weather.  The wide white walls and two piece hubcaps with painted rims are so choice.  The overall design without bumpers over riders, headrests, or side reflectors are what Bracq meant our cars to be. Just beautiful!

Nice car!  It's just like mine, except for the white wall tires!

The wide white wall tyres are out of date now nearly ten years old and on Monday i am fitting a new set of tyres that only have a 25mm white stripe. It was a cost decision based on Cokers being nearly Aud$500 for each tyre and a set of five others being five for the single price of one Coker.  I really love the wide WW but not the price….

Well I certainly understand your decision.  The wider white walls just give it a very authentic touch.  But even with thinner ones, it’ll have that clean, crisp summer time appearance.  AND it’ll be safer.

To be honest I’ve never been a fan of wide white walls on SLs. Consider my opinion changed! Something about the color combination just fits your car perfectly - wow!

Garry, I am also on the hunt for new (thin) white wall tyres in Australia. I have looked at the following that seem to be available here. Maxxis/ Sumitomo/ Michelin/ Nankang. Which model and size have you decided on?
What would others recommend for regular driving?
Thanks Dave

Dave,
I have the 195/75 Maxxis on my car.  The diameter/circumference is almost identical to the original tires.  I have been very happy with them - both in looks and performance.

Dave,

I went on ebay and purchased five of them and had the local Beaurepair fit and balance for about $20 a tyre.  They actually ride well and I have no complaints.  I will probably replace them every 5 years at that price!!!!!

Yes, at that price, you literally stole them! I guess with the low kilometres these cars do, it is likely they will expire before they wear out. I was told by my local tyre guy that they do reach their ‘used by date’ after three to five years, depending on the conditions they are exposed to, weather, temperature, sunlight etc.
Great buy Garry and they look fantastic on your car.
Any other Aussie white wall tyre recommendations?

There are quite a few on ebay with varying prices. Just put in White Wall tyres 185 14. And ensure that you go on the Aust eBay site.

I recently checked my tyres and calculated they were at least 15 years old so replaced with Michelins with a small whitewall. Pretty happy with the result. Great service and a fair price from Antiique Tyres in West Heidelberg.

Terry,

What a special looking car, beautiful! I love the colour and the white wall tyres really set it off. I have tried to find Michelin although they are not well stocked here due to low sales volumes and high price vs. other models.

Are they the Michelin MVX 185/80/14? How much where they?

Hi Dave
They are MXV 185R 14 90H. Antique Tyres here in Melbourne had them in stock - no problem. The set were around $1250 fitted.
A link to the tyres is here: https://antiquetyresonline.com.au/michelin-185hr14-mxv-20mm-wsw/

I had some slightly over sized Michelins prior ot this and the cars feels so much more responsive with the new tyres.
Mind you the difference between 15 + year old tyres and new probably helps.

I did find the people at Antique Tyres really helpful - if you can't source anything locally I'm sure they would help.

Terry, thanks for the confirmation, this is very helpful.
Delighted to know I can source locally and at a reasonable price for Michelins!
Hope to meet up one day, in either Melbourne or Adelaide,
Dave

Beautiful pictures. Thanks for sharing. I recently got my Pagoda out of storage. Taking the car to my mechanic for the annual Spring checkup and oil change. We are going to have a stretch of 80F weather with 0% chance of rain in Ohio. Many road trips on the schedule!

Also setting time aside to clay bar the car.
