113 Trunk Side Insulation (R)
« on: March 01, 2022, 20:53:42 »
Ordered the Right Side inside insulation behind spare tire. Received a part that looks like it for a completely different car.
Supplier says its correct, if so my X-Acto knife will come in handy .
Thoughts appreciated.

It is correct. It is bent when you push it in. The upper edge reaches almost to the trunk upper edge where the seal is on top of. It forms a half - bow or maybe half - arch I should say, following the curve of the fender.

It is a physical exercise to push it in.

I placed the bottom edge when it should be on the trunk floor, upper edge under the trunk top where the seal is on top and pushed it in.

Thank you Pawel,
Makes sense, I will give it my best shot.
What's with holes, I'm guessing given the different variations of side markers ?
Hope all is well in Poland

The holes are also used to mount the small fuel evap tank found on most w113 except late USA 280’s.

The cut outs are for evaporation tank, as explained already. There are clips for this tank there, I bought them from Mercedes, but they are also available from other vendors, if you need PNs, let us know.

It is ok in Poland now, thank you. Receiving hundreds of thousands of refugees. Everybody is scared where this is going to go...

The fuel evap tank is a U.S. thingy. Rest of the world did not have it. These carbon canisters are based on California laws that forbid venting tank fumes to the atmosphere. Even newer vehicles in the U.S. in states other than CA did not have it. I have a motorcycle that was originally destined for CA, but then sold new in OH, it has the mounting for the tank, but it was removed and the system modified by the selling dealer.

This here says 1970 model year, but it doesn't say which country. My car is a German 1971 280SL. Does NOT have it and never did.

My 1970 German delivery had the tank on the right hand side.

Parts book does not contain any distinctions nor differences, other than the left hand side shown for 113044 with an SA code.

There are two versions of the tank. The picture that kampala posted is the left side supposedly for all W113 except 1970-on 280SL. The right side tank is a large rectangular piece for 1970-on 280SL

I think it is the other way around, the other left and the other right. :)

I think the large ones went to the US while Euro had the small, right hand side ones.

When you look at the parts list for 113044 for the world markets, the small evap tank (on the right) has no remarks, no notes for the entire 113044.

When you look at the parts list for 113044 for the US and Canada, the small evap tank has the following note:

"001
044 UP TO CHASSIS 011947 EXCEPT FOR, SEE FOOTNOTE 003

003
011784,  011830,  011899,  011903,  011912-  011916,  011918,  011920,  011921,  011930-  011933,  011941-  011945."
