Alternator wiring loom routing

Can anyone help please,

I am currently installing the alternator after it was reconditioned.  - its an older style that has terminals with individual connections rather than a single plug.  When I pulled it out I noticed that the wiring was a bit "ordinary" and it worried me that it was so close to the exhaust.

So, the alternator wiring is an off take from a loom  that runs from the firewall,  beside the motor and under the inlet manifold, the wires for the alternator exit, then it continues upwards and disappears into the air cleaner shroud (for want of a better term).

I know its a tough one for a photo but can anyone at least describe the route of this loom and any where it is held with a bracket?

Thanks Gary - its a tough one to work on, let alone get a photo of - much appreciated. I think it will help - it looks like there is a loop that holds it to the block before it heads up to the back of the alternator (which helps keep it free of the exhaust). Ta muchly

Hello George,
I rebuilt my 35A alternator about 3 years ago and due to 55+ years of heat off the exhaust manifold, I found it necessary to replace the wires between the alternator and starter. In order to keep the wires as far away as possible from the exhaust manifold, I rerouted them under the right engine mount – the same way the positive battery cable is routed to the starter. I changed the bracket/loop that secures the battery cable to the oil pan in order to accommodate the wires (see pic). For added protection from heat, I enclosed the wires in neoprene conduit I got from Rhode Island Wiring. I realize this routing is not 'correct' for an early 230sl and it may be a bit of overkill, but I wanted to protect the new wires from exhaust manifold heat as much as possible. My car is LHD.
