Need new softtop
« on: May 26, 2005, 13:23:58 »
The rear window on my 280SL softtop has split. There are lots of worn places on the canvas, too. It is time to replace the top.
It is parchment, and the closest match I've been able to find is a white/tan from Millers. Having never dealt with them, I am wondering about others' experiences. Also, if anyone has a source for a parchment top, other than a dealer, please advise.
Thanks,
Joe

I have purchased dozens of parts from Millers.  The parts I have received are of good quality, competitively priced, and shipped quickly.  I have found Kevin at the North Carolina location to be pretty knowledgable.

I think if you search the discussions, there was a thread not long ago with reference to the German "Pagode" site where you could buy various colors from the supplier.  It will likely be more expensive than Miller's and shipping definately will be.  But, how many times will you look at the color and wish, "if only"?

Try GAHH, they show over 20 different convertible top colors.

Try S&S Imports in our contact database.  Are you planning on installing it yourself?

Thanks for the help, guys. I called Will Samples this morning, and he said the parchment top hasn't been made in years. He recommended GAHH. The GAHH website didn't show this color, and tops in other colors started at $625. I really can't drive the car much in this weather without a softtop being available, so I just decided to put a black top on. Black over red isn't so bad anyway, but I hate to loose the authenticity. The white top from Millers might be too light, so I decided to pass on it.
I ordered the top from PrestigeAutoTrim in England; this is the source of the top I put on my 230SL a couple of years ago. Yes, I did it myself. I think this one will go faster, but will still take most of a day.
