HUB CAPS
« on: June 01, 2005, 20:47:13 »
Anyone out there that can tell me where to start hunting for 4 new or nearly new signal red hubcaps for my 71 pagoda.  Mine that I have, have a few minor dings and minor road rash.  Unacceptable to me.  Want the best available.  Where do I start to look and what can I expect to pay??  Does anyone sell the plain ones without paint and I can have them painted signal red???  Thanks for any help that you pros can give a rookie!!

Thanks,
Terry

You can get new ones at several vendors including k&k MFG,  wwwkkmfg.com and Millers.  At K&K I think they run about $125 per hubcap.  I'd also check w/ the vendors list on this site.

For painting, masking is an option, and (according to threads on the site) can be done, but is a painstaking process. You might run a question to see if there is someone who has for sale or for lending, the hubcap painting template from Benz. This is a two part tool, one that covers the star in the center, and an outer ring to cover chrome outer edge.

If you go to any decent restoration shop, they'll be able to help. Those exact hubcaps were used all through the 70 & 80s and are still available today, so they'll know what to do. They'll either use a masking template, if they have one, or masking tape to paint them. It's a little tedious, but any good restoration shop will know. You folks in California have no shortage of decent shops for that kind of work.

Look for the steel chrome hub caps notthe later dull replacement caps. I had an early set polished and then painted look terriffic. chech on www.hubcaps .com for used like new condition hub caps. Expensive but premium replacments.

I just found (almost by accident) a great place in the San Jose, CA, area for painting my hubcaps.  I asked the painter if he had a stencil, and he replied (in a lovely German accent) that the stencils left a rough edge, and that he used "micro-tape" to create a clean edge.  They charged $50 per hub cap, or $200 total!  What a deal, and a beautiful job (especially compared to what I might have done myself).  Barring any technical difficulties, those of you going to Blacklick should be able to see them in person.  The company is Michael & Co., 408-286-2988; ask for Rich, the service manager.
