Paint stripper works well and depending on how "environmentally friendly" it is you may need a few coats.

Use a plastic scraper to scrape the paint off so you don't scratch anything and once done you can use 0000 steel wool to finish it off   Has to be 0000 - anything less you will scratch the chrome.

Then very important to wash in water to neutralize any remnants otherwise the paint you put on later could react.

Do this in a well ventilated location outside or in a garage and wear gloves that don't disintegrate.   Most of the strippers have an ingredient called Lye so it is corrosive on the skin so wear eye protection and wash your arms and hands in water after working on the caps.

The Pagoda Group has a set of stencils in USA that get passed on from Member to Member but i am unsure who has them at the moment.

They are still available, at a price!

Some on Ebay, but shipping and tax may be prohibitive, and the SL shop has them, gold plated with diamond inserts

Brennie, why not just lightly sand to smooth and paint over the top? Use this as an undercoat of sorts?

Any tips on the primer/paint I should use to adhere to the chrome? Reluctant to score it ..

I have used self etching primer on clean chrome. Works quite well.
