spring in steering box
«

All,
Hope all is well.
What is the function of the (fat) spring in the steering box?
The spring sits in a small barrel, and from the outside you see a small hole (see red arrow)
And it leaks ...
Help.

I know the steering box is a complex thing with relatively lite content.
But could somebody shed some light?

When the box leaks from that hole it's time for a rebuild.
