Relay for 280SL
« on: October 10, 2022, 12:42:43 »
Hi, this question relates to my 1970 280SL - was unable to find previous posts about this topic (perhaps I was using the wrong search words).

I'm not exactly sure of the function of the large cannister relay on the driver's side of the front guard (RHD car) - see attached photo for the original relay type.

Am I correct in saying the ('Original') Cannister type relay was commonly replaced by the smaller type? ('Replacement relay')

Is the Cannister type (with yellow tape around the base) still available?

My car runs just fine with the newer type, but I would like to have it factory correct if possible for a concours car. (FYI - the 1969 is driven more regularly)

Thanks in advance.

Hello, that first picture looks a lot like the voltage regulator and that's where its usually found, near the cold start valve on the intake side.   My 280SL relays are over on the other side near the brake booster.

The voltage regulator on my car has been replaced with an electronic type, but the "container" is similar to but shorter than the one you show in the top picture. I just took the top case off, re-wrapped the joint with yellow electrical tape, and voila, picture perfect replacement.

Thanks Jonny,

I did hear this. Car runs so well l would like to keep the set up l have, but with the original regulator case and use yellow electrical tape ( as you have).

Dear Rob

Can you indicate the manufacturer and part number of that electronic external voltage regulator that you sourced for your car.  I am interested in buying some of them for my project cars.

Best regards

My 230sl that was a tourist delivery, has the same item as well. Don’t know if it was fitted locally after delivery.
