Compensation spring clearance
« on: September 15, 2022, 21:30:52 »
I have strange cracking sound from the rear and I can hear sound from rear springs.
I vent under the car to do the greasing of the rear axle and did notice that the compensation spring is in direct onto the front fuel tank bracket, see picture, and this creates sound when I pushed the car up and down.
Shouldn't there be a clearance? How big gap should it be?

Thanks for ideas.
The first thing I did this spring was to replace the center-mount and I also looked over the spring rubbers, the right lower was missing so installed a new one.
The sound from the rear was worse before I replaced the upper center-mount.
The rear greasing helped for a short while, probably the lower rubber mount to the vertical support is all warn, if that’s the case the center rear ought to fall down a bit to cause the center spring to ride on the tank bracket.

Hello,

It's possible that the carrier is out of adjustment.  If you see attached diagram the carrier is item 6 and adjusting this moves the diff forward or back. This might have a flow on affect though with drive shaft. Hope this helps....

Thanks Joe,
I think your suggestion is very valid
I have ordered the tube bearing (no5 in the picture) and when I replace the bearing, the package is lose so I can try to adjust the position a bit foreward, I also have to loosen the lock nut for the prop.shaft splines so it can be mowed.

Hi Lars,

There's quite a bit of adjustment there so I think you'll be able to move it a cm at least and as you said the spline in the tailshaft will also have adjustment

Good luck let me know how it goes

It can't be done properly with the axle in the car. You also need to set the vertical pin to 90 degrees which is impossible to do while installed.

I will give it a try as I also will replace the rear trailing arm bushings, front once are already replaced.
I will also replace the the prop. shaft as I will install a 5-speed Getrag gearbox and by that I believe that if everything is rather loose it ought to be adjusted slightly forward. I'll post back when it's done.
