FS: 1968 Red 250 SL California Coupe (it has the backseat)
« on: December 16, 2022, 19:53:51 »
I have a Southern California car for sale with all service receipts. This car has been garage kept and has been an amazing car for our family. We have owned the car since 1998 and have driven it once a quarter putting 4000 miles on it since ownership.

Miles:
202k on chassis
46k on new MBZ engine. All original MBZ parts

Owner history:
We purchased the vehicle from the 2nd owner in 1998. He owned for 20 years following his purchase from the original owner

Repaint/restoration
Original paint and parts except not original seats. Seller replaced with current Recaro Italian race seats as he would transport the car to Laguna Seca and run in the vintage car races annually. If you want the original seats put in the vehicle put in I will have that done. It may take some time to get that done but we will do that.

Repair needed
Attachment for left front reflector. Reflector on car but loose
Rubber ring holders for muffler system need replacement

Other items:
- This car has a rebuilt engine - I don't have the paperwork
- The clock does not work
- The tach does not work
- It has aftermarket radio that does work
- It has aftermarket air and it does work

Here are some pics of the vehicle:

Let me know if you have any questions as I would be happy to respond to them.

PRICE: $77,000  / 80,000k new/old seats to be more period correct

I think your asking price is in the right bracket. Nobody will find a Pagoda anymore for 30K. And those around 50K are in dire need of work. I don't consider the stuff you list as major issues. I would try to get as much documentation together as you can, maybe go back to the previous owner. You could be surprised what you could find. This car would definitely sell for your asking price on BaT. You may not find a buyer here. Forums are notoriously bad for selling the subject of the enthusiasm. Few people come/are here looking for a car to buy. Unless it is a re-seller. And they are looking for steals only.

I am not your buyer, but I think you should clarify if this car is a "california coupe" without a soft top or if it has a soft top - this is a major point for most buyers.

Can't tell for certain but it looks to me that this might be california coupe with the back seat.

I would agree with Kampala, check photos 5 and 6 appears to be the top of a seat from the back view.

It does have the back seats still, does that mean it is a California coupe? Is that more rare or is that something that is fairly common? I did not know that is what they were called.

Thanks so much!

This is confusing.

YOu want an extra $3k for the old seats?

The California coupe, which means there is not top and no way, other than cubic dollars, to fit a top - it is a rebuild of the middle of the car to put in the compartment the top folds back into.

Yes it is a rarer car, but it is not a value add.

We will source and put the original seats back in the car for an extra 3k. Sorry for any confusion.

If you are indeed charging $3k for the seats, you need to at least take a picture of them.

I think to make it easier on you, switch the seats now and just sell the old (or try to) seats and raise the price to $80k.

Like I said, you should be able to get $1k for the seats.

All being said, $80k for a California Coupe...you're kind of close to the top of the market.

I don't think he owns the seats to take a picture of. He said he would "source" them for $3k. A lot of California coupes in similar condition have sold for $60k or less.

Yeah, I know that is the top of the market. People can always come see and drive and make an offer.

I think the one thing this car has going for it is that it may have original paint. I am going to get the paint checked professionally to see if it is truly original paint with no accidents.

I know the seats are a problem as we may just source some and get the right seats in there.

Renewing the seats will be a long and expensive task, unless you happen upon a ready-to-go black pair. If the Recaro seats are comfortable and working well I'd leave them in, and call them an 'upgrade' - many buyers won't be as picky as us. That driver seat would benefit from repair and reconditioning though Can you swap the driver and passenger seat?. The coupes do sell for significantly less but I think are a little underrated. Especially if they are lighter than the standard car (not sure they are, just guessing).

Thanks Dave Ill look into that. I am not sure I can swap the seats but that is a really good idea. Merry Christmas!
