Emergency Brake Handle...need to know if this looks right?
« on: December 02, 2022, 17:57:21 »
I was closely inspecting my emergency brake handle, just by the driver seat, and the point where the cable is attached looks a bit sketchy.   I am wondering if anyone could take a pic of their handle to compare?   I know mine failed some 50 years ago and my dad repaired it.  I believe this is when the scratches and chipped paint happened, with the corrosion coming along later.

Either way I am not liking the looks of the hole where the pin fits to hold the cable into the handle assembly.  I'm guessing it should not be deformed or oval shaped.   I sure don't want to have it fail again because I still have vivid memory of the first time it failed...about '71 or '72 I think.   Thats another story.

Before I charge in and fix it, I was hoping to have a picture of a healthy handle/cable interface to reference?   It should be very easy to take the picture, but you will need a good bright light to the side of the camera to get a clear shot in focus since its dark in that area.

Thanks in advance!  -Mark

...and BTW, never, ever trust the emergency brake in these cars, or any car for that matter.   I'm sure you all know this, but its worth the reminder, because my car did suddenly take its self for a ride once...without a driver.   Fortunately no external damage, but it does happen.   so when you park, just assume the brake will fail and ask yourself what will happen then?   Are your wheels cocked or chocked?  Is it in gear?  Is the hill steep?  Where would it go if it decided to take off?    Yes, I'm paranoid, but it did happen to me, so....

Yep I think you are right, it needs repair or replace.

Hello Mark, not sure it will help but I've attached a photo of mine as well. It looks like the weld on your brake handle broke loose years ago and I agree with DaveB that it should be repaired (rewelded) or replaced. It wouldn't be too difficult to remove and replace it.
