Zimber 230SL Wheel?
« on: January 02, 2023, 22:03:23 »
Does anyone know anything about these wheels? Apparently quite uncommon and supposedly made for the 230SL. Though the seller has second thoughts about whether it is actually for a 113, thinking it might be for a Ponton or even a 300SL. There's no cancel ring on the backside. Price is relatively reasonable and what a unique wheel!

Same wheel in a special BMW 1800 and a similar one in a 300SL.

 Good evening

Yes the steering wheel was manufactured in 1963 for the 230 SL  to 300 SE Convertible .
It does not need a hub – the hub is underneath .
The hole is to place a wire to the steering column to make activating the top horn button
You don’t need any other parts.

On the Forum , second picture with the similar steering wheel with holes on the spokes was made for Gullwing.

Gullwinggirl appears to be promoting a business specialized in selling wooden steering wheels (for as much as $16,000 a wheel!).

I had emailed Gullwinggirl last night after finding her website as being one of the few places on the internet referencing these wheels, the post above is more or less a copy of the email she sent.

I have modified the Gullwinggirl post to remove the commercial content but left the relevant data that is informative.

Sure looks cool, but I can't figure out how to remove the horn button so it can actually be screwed on! Anyone have any ideas? It does not seem this comes apart like a Nardi wheel might.

Figured it out. I put a screwdriver into the back and gently depressed this little bracket that is designed to hold one of the wires for the horn button. It came right out. I had emailed gullwinggirl earlier and she only got back to me after I figured this out... and said specifically not to use a screwdriver as I could damage the wheel button and then I'm SOL. Good thing nothing happened. Advises using a wooden spoon handle or something similar. In case anyone ever comes across one of these wheels in the future, well, now you know!
