WTB ashtray for 1967 230SL
« on: January 08, 2023, 05:16:02 »
Hey guys,

Looking for an ashtray or maybe some ideas on how to fill the hole where the ashtray belongs.  I do have the ashtray but the cover is missing.

Thanks

Brett

Let me know what interior colour you have got there. I believe I have two used and one brand new ashtray. They are all known to eventually lose the lid, if the owner was a heavy smoker at some point....

Brett,

I'm pretty sure the material in the top of the ash tray should match the material inserts on your window cranks.  Here's a pick of what mine look like (but, this pic is from some eBay auction) and another pic showing that I guess they did do colors.

On the early 230’s, the ashtray lid, window handle inserts and door pull (passenger side) were all black.  Somewhere in Pagoda Notes it lists when they were changed over to having all these parts match the upholstery color.  Since Brett’s car has a turquoise interior, I’d opt for these pieces to be black since finding them in turquoise would be impossible.  If color matching is desired, however,  vinyl paint could be custom match to the interior and sprayed on these trim elements.  (There’s an NOS ashtray with black lid currently on eBay for around $200.)

I’m really anxious to see how this particular car’s interior turns out!

I have a Jan 1964 that has what I think is the original ashtray, judging by the condition of the non exposed tray. For what it is worth n=1), the upholstery color is red, which matches the factory seat and carpet color it left the factory with.

Personally, I think the matching color makes aesthetic sense, although it is very easy to replace for car shows or the next owner etc, so I would suggest whatever brings you joy, go with that color!

Dave, You don't explicitly say it.  Are you saying you have red interior and the ashtray lid has matching red material?  What about the window cranks?

My car is registered as a 1966 but was manufactured in August or September, 1965.  I have had it since new.  The seats are medium blue MBtex 2310.  The inserts on the window cranks are dark blue.  The ashtray lid cover is black.  All of these are as they came from the factory.

i think your car must be right on the cusp when they changed from black to upholstery colour, in July/August 65, looks like chassis number 12343.  As with most hand builds, they probably had coloured door pulls and window crank handles, but may have had the odd black ash tray cover lurking in the box
