Engine mounts, 2.3 engine on a W111
« on: May 13, 2023, 18:28:58 »
Hello,
My W111 Coupé had the engine changed to a 2.3 SL engine about 30 years back. 8 years ago when I was restoring it I tried as much as possible to use original parts or NOS. Even with 30 years engineering experience and you still make mistakes. Don’t do that on parts with rubber, rubber gets brittle in time, even silicone has a shelf life.
So I got original engine mounts probably made in the 60s. I could feel the engine vibration inside. So I replaced those old mounts with sedan 108 mounts. That’s how the old mounts look after 20K miles.
In the picture, the left one, the right one and a used 108 sedan.
So I replaced them and I noticed something else. The engine is tilted and it wasn’t because the old right mount is lower. It is still tilted after replacing them with the new mounts (see picture, look at the oil pan bottom against the sway bar).
That made me check the engine brackets PNs with my endoscope. The right one is 127 223 09 04 which has been used for a period of time on the W113 only. On the left bracket I could read only …0204.. because a steering hydraulic line and another cooler is blocking the view. So I looked up all the W111 and W113 numbers and the only that could have been there is 127 223 02 04 and that is the one that Xentry says that my 250 SE was born with. So I have a mix/match which explains the engine tilt and who knows what else was affected by this (transmission mount, etc)
I am inclined to replace the right bracket (way more access than the left one) with sedan bracket. That one, lifting the engine about 1/2 higher should resolve the engine tilt, I hope and othe issues.
Should I not do that and have both brackets from 113?

Thank you,
Radu

According to the EPC, the correct right-side bracket is A180 223 25 04.  It is used on 108, 109, and 111 cars, so it should be available.

Good luck,

The difference between the W113 and the W111 (W111 is the one in the back).
