Option code 528
« on: July 24, 2023, 17:51:51 »
I’m trying to replace the original radio and antenna for my 1967 250 SL. I replaced the original radio and manual antenna decades ago and at that time was not concerned about originality. I am now doing a restoration and I’m trying to determine if it had a factory installed radio and antenna or if this was installed by the dealer. I have my original data card and have reviewed the technical manual for relevant radio options and have none of the codes listed. The only possibly relevant option code I have is 528 and I have not been able to find out what this means. Does anyone know what this code indicates?

In my list of option codes, 528 is a paint preservation and paint kit. = 524+525 combined
Factory radio installation is in field 51 and radio prep without radio (dealer installation) would be in field 53

Unless I missing something, all radio options were listed in box 51 and antenna options in 53.  Almost always there was an antenna but if box 51 is empty, then no factory installed radio was included.  I know of no such code as 528.

Clearly there is not a factory installed radio.

Since your car was delivered without a radio, I would guess the dealer probably would have installed either a Becker Europa TR, or a Blaupunkt Frankfurt. Or possibility just sold it with the radio delete plate.  No way to know for certain but these were the two most common dealer installed radios.  Possibly a Becker Grand Prix?  As for antennas, either a Wisi, Fit or Hirschmann though other brands could work.
What I’d do is determine the opening size on your dash and then try to find a Becker or Blaupunkt that would work.  Match the knobs on the radio to whatever style knob is in your car (cigarette lighter, windowcranks, etc.)  Going this route should satisfy most concourse judges if exhibiting your car is one of your intentions.   Certainly  the car would appear stock.

Just to throw in my 2 cents: was the radio you had installed before wired as per "Pagoda rules"? I mean - with the positive wires pulled out of the harness near the voltage regulator, then routed through the auxillary fuse box and then firewall, etc.? I would check it and make sure it is done "the factory way". There is quite a lot about it on this forum.

By the way: I would try to avoid pictures in posts showing your ignition key number (Lenkungschloss) - these posts are public.
