Help wit Gas Cap leakage
« on: August 13, 2023, 21:59:37 »
Hi,
I would appreciate any advice on my gas cap with it's leakage. I have tried two different rubber seals, I just got a cork seal, so I'll see how that does. But can anyone advise what is the best way to clean my chrome bumper from the gas residue? Thank you!

A spray bottle of isopropyl alcohol (91%) cut with an equal volume of distilled water is always in the garage for such clean ups. Spray it on and wipe it off with a clean cloth.

I was having a similar issue.  The problem was overfilling the tank and then when the car was being driven, the gas expanded. So now I no longer top off and presto no issues.   I’ve actually found rubber gaskets better than the cork ones but there are others at this forum who disagree.

neither cork or rubber can be used... You must use silicone gasket. you can get it from Mercedes: A1404710079

Some years back, I changed the gasket. I think I got it at Autohaus AZ or some other place, Authentic Classics has the cork style for about $7.
The ones on eBay A1404710079 are crazy priced. $25 and more for a piece of rubber, totally ridiculous. Some were $68!

Mine is a blue rubber. The only issue I have is that it is a bit thicker than the cork and thus you really have to be careful (particularly with those cost like gold chrome gas caps!) to ensure it is secure. A little lubricant on the seal makes it easier. It's a bit of a bear to secure. Sometimes I need a glove to do it.

I'd have to agree that silicone would be an improvement. But I'm not going to pay $25-$68 for such a thing. Be your own judge.

As for the spillage, well--Len has it right. Don't top off. The alcohol soaked rag is a good cleanup scheme.

You might have pressure build up in your tank = common issue as the vent lines to the expansion tank can get blocked.  This can be easily fixed by cleaning the vent lines. Search the forum.

I use the blue seal from Mercedes as the cork ones fell apart.  The blue seal is about $17 from Mercedes.  I just coat a little oil on it.

Thanks for all the feedback.
When I looked at the suggested link everyone provided for either the silicone or blue gaskets, the sites come back and state that the gaskets are not for my model and year?  Does the model and year matter in selecting a gasket? I have a 1964 230SL
Thanks again.

Don’t worry.  It’ll fit perfectly.  When I ordered it from the Classic Center they said to get the cork one because they couldn’t guarantee fitment.  In think in theory it’s made for a model w124 gas cap.  If it’s a tad bit of a tight fit on the filler neck, I’ve used a small dap of Vaseline and then it slides on.

After PUB 2011, I put on a cork gasket and have not had any fuel expansion leaks.  The trick is to coat the cork with a thin film of Vaseline when it's new.  I did that once and have not had any problems and it goes on easily and fits snugly.

When my cork one fell apart I got a blue one (whatever material it is I don't know).
The blue one was very difficult to use on my car, even with a lubricant.
I'm sure there are some small differences in dimensions on all our cars after all the years of wear.
I went back to a cork gasket. After all, the first one lasted more than 40 years !!!  ::)
This was back in ~~2010. Never looked back again.

when i bought a new cap many years back (i think from mercedes) it came with a cork gasket.

eventually the cork failed and i ended up with a blue one similar to the pictures shown.

sometimes the blue rubber gasket makes it hard to  turn the cap so i have to apply a lubricant to the gasket.

$23.50 is list price. I just called my local MB parts department and gave them the part # 1404710079. It is coming in 2 days, and no shipping charges.

The blue gasket was added to my gas cap by my local M-B dealer when I had it serviced before PUB Virginia a few years back and has worked very well. It benefits from an occasional application of Vaseline or silicone lubricant to make it easy to remove and reinstall.
