1965 230SL correct distributor?
« on: October 05, 2023, 05:47:33 »
Hello I have a 65 230SL RHD

Is this the correct distributor? I’ve been told it’s not….

The vacuum port lies to the rear of the distributor ie closer to the firewall

Thanks:-)

If you don’t get an answer  — Since you are a Full Member - you can access the tech manual.  Go to tech manual, electrical systems, distributors

There is a huge amount of detail on this topic.

Let us know what you find.
250sl - later - manual
280sl - 1971 - Auto - LSD

Per the tech manual, it would depend on when in 1965 your car was built.

Yes, it's about the VIN or better engine number which determines your correct distributor
(usually, if this had not been replaced in the past). ???

Yours is a vacuum advance, most likely a 0 231 116 046 distributor or maybe the earlier 040 (VJUR6 BR 49T).
The vacuum port on the throttle housing should be located on the top.

Thanks all for your help

Yes with your assistance and engine no being 1904 I think it should be the earlier one. I take it has the vacuum advance on the top, not on the side as per my photo. So is it an easy swap out ?

Well, we are talking here about two different things:

a) the distributor
b) the throttle housing (Venturi housing) in front of your intake manifold.

Both should match.
a) Your distributor appears to be correct (see (and read) my post above)
b) your throttle housing?
Don't know which one you have, you did not show us.....

For a correct 127981-20-001904 engine yours should look like the one on the pic (not mine) attached.
