best supplier to rebuild a Bosch Injection Pump
« on: July 23, 2023, 16:04:05 »
I am new to MB product but have a ton of experience in automotive rebuilding and restoration on US carbureted vehicles. That being said, I have been given the opportunity to ressurect a '71 280 SL that had been sitting in a barn for the last 15 years with a half tank of fuel. I drained the tank and it's very rusty inside so I ordered a new one. I pulled the fuel pump and it was completely gelled up to the point that the motor wouldn't even turn...had to use pliers. I bought a rebuilt kit and the video's from Mercedesource.com and plan of rebuilding it myself.  The fuel hoses are brittle and the lines are varnished and gelled up which leads me to believe that the injector pump is as well. I don't want to do a trial and error on the pump as this is a customers vehicle and based on the technical manual, very difficult to get right so I'm looking at the best solution to ensure it will operate properly. The car was driven into the barn and parked in mid '08.  Thx in advance!

Hi Ryan,
Welcome to the Pagoda group.

The only place I'm aware of that offers rebuild for the injection pumps is Bud's Benz. I'm sure there must be others but I'm not aware.
I know nothing about Bud's or their rebuild service, but have seen on their web site that they offer the service or exchange.

Good luck.

Most use either Pacific or Fairchild. Pretty sure Buds sends it to one of these. Black Forest LLC also has a complete set up to test these pumps. Not as many know about him. He has been around for a long time and is also a full serve shop for these. I think he is in WI.

There is a guy in Germany who I hear is outstanding and recommended on this site -  https://www.oldtimer-technik.eu/  I also got a recommendation for him from a guy in Germany that is on a Ponton forum.

I just sent my two plunger 220SE pump to him and I hope he is as good as advertised. Yes, shipping isn't cheap. Don't ask.

I was planning on using Pacific.  I need to give them a call.

I used Pacific last year.  I had the engine out for a rebuild at Metric and both it and the FIP AND FI’s were completed relatively quickly.  Was able to get the car back on the road within 8 weeks.

He was as of last year.  I was told he was thinking about retiring but I don’t know if that was immediate or in the future.  His shop does exceptional work!

I plan on taking the pump from my 6.3 next weekend to "Fairchilds" in Shingletown Northern California. Driving it there, I don't trust mailing it:) I've chatted with him there a few times and he seems to be very knowledgeable and I've only heard good things. I'll let you know how it goes. A close friend of mine had his 6.3 rebuilt there and it runs like a charm.
Cheers John.

Gus rebuilt my pump 2 years ago and did an outstanding job.  He's also got such an interesting life story from South Africa to Switzerland, so it's a pleasure talking with him.

I dropped off 2 pumps at Black Forest llc. in Milwaukee last Saturday. I gave Michael McKinney my partially disassembled R24 original from my 1970 and an R20 that I pulled from a 68 SE a few years ago. Michael says my car is likely to be easier to get the mixture right with the R20 incorporated into my R24. He will examine both over the next few months and report back. Michael offered as much time as I was willing to spend with him. He gave me a detailed tour of the injection pump rebuild process and a tour of his facility in which at least 10 Pagodas were present in addition to a few 190's. The inner workings of the mechanical injection pump is nothing short of an engineering marvel and Michael has a thorough understanding of how every component functions and what to look for in worn components. In a small dedicated room in the corner of the BF facility, he has bins full of replacement components both remanufactured, reproduced and recycled from other pumps. Of course there are 2 machines for bench testing and calibration.

Michael offered to host a small gathering of Pagoda enthusiasts which I will work on scheduling in the near future.
