Indicator Cancellation Stalk/Steering rack
« on: October 26, 2023, 11:51:11 »
Hi there

I apologise for yet another post about non cancelling indicators, and I have trawled through all the great advice on this site!

My car is a 1964 230Sl and I have the dreaded non cancelling indicators. I have checked the orientation of the steering shaft and sadly, that is correct. I am in the throws of removing the stalk, and I'm pinning my hopes that I can fix it as per Allenh's Excellent fix from 2009, with heat shrink. What I can't find is a good pic of the cancel pin on the steering shaft? There is a pic on the Wiki, but I can't tell if its a round pin and how far it sticks out?

If its not that, its some open heart surgery on the stalk unit, which is something I am loathe to do, as I'm terrified of ending up with a handful of springs and levers, and no wipers as well as indicators!

I have also read Greg and Georges most excellent Turn Mech repair, and although I understand what's required, not sure I'm up to it!

Thanks in Advance

Rob

Hi there

I have finally plucked up the courage to attack this, and have released the stalk as per the Tech diagram 54-17/1 shown. What I am struggling with, is getting enough slack on the cables to be able to get to the terminals on the stalk, as shown. is there a way of releasing the loom, or do I just use a bit of brute force!

many thanks in advance

Update

I removed the trim under dash and that enabled me to push loom through. Fingers crossed the heat shrink trick works!

My indicators never used to cancel, i think one side was worse than the other. Then one day they decided they would no longer lock in position, so i had to hold the stalk in place , tricky on roundabouts.  I was going to send them to Sead over winter, as i didn't want to tackle the job myself

Then, a few weeks ago, i was out and had to use the wipers, hence i pushed the stalk in, and hey presto  the indicators started working again.  No doubt they may fail again if something is worn or loose
