How to mount the interior ventilation fan to the body.
« on: December 13, 2023, 18:28:11 »
Hello there!

Could someone tell me, or send me a picture on how the interior ventilation fan shroud is mounted to the car body on the lower part. The upper two rubber mounts is OK, but I can not find any mounting bracket fixation point for the single lower mount. When I bought the car there where just a metal piece hanging loose from the rubber mount, i.e. without and fixation to the body. I have searched internet for pictures without any luck.

Sorry I don't have a photo to share. It is fastened to the body with an "L" shaped bracket. One leg of the L fastens to the fan casing and the other fastens to the top of the transmission tunnel. If you have the fan and its case out, you should be able to see a hole in the transmission tunnel. The other leg of the L is attached with an M6 screw (10mm wrench size) through this hole with a nut on the underneath side. I am trying to recall if there is a rubber buffer (like the two at the top of the case) at the bottom. I don't believe there is a rubber buffer there but if you have a gap, then possibly you do need a buffer.
I also believe that this matter was addressed in a post some time ago. I did a quick search but could not find the post. Maybe someone with better search karma can find it.  Good luck

Here's a photo showing the bracket. Its from the internet and this is the only angle but hopefully you get the idea.

Here’s a picture from a ‘70 280SL, not sure if yours is the same (230SL). There is a round rubber mount installed horizontally between the fan housing and the gold CAD plated L shaped bracket as I show here. Then a short bolt with preferably a self-locking nut with washer inside the upper driveshaft tunnel.  I hope this helps.  Cheers and God Bless, JohnnyC

Perfect, JohnnyC! The first picture was spot on  :D Then I have to make a small bracket which the rubber mount is fixed to. It's a little bit strange, because I don't see a hole in the bodywork to fix the bracket... Anyway, this is a good solution.

Jan,  Look at the upper area of the drive shaft tunnel about 20 inches forward of the stick shift cutout center for the mounting hole. All the best to you.

Cheers, JohnnyC
