Bumper brackets - original colour
« on: February 12, 2024, 02:07:15 »
Howdy all,

Maybe more of an observation for those interested but ... please chime in if you have any knowledge about this one....

Was restoring my bumper bar brackets and looks like the first coat of paint they received was the body colour - signal red for mine (at least on an early 1964 230sl) and then black was applied over the top perhaps prior to bumper fitment.

This could mean any of the following possiblities

1. The car was painted with the bumper bar brackets on and then the black was applied after but at factory
2. The bumper bar brackets were left body colour red intentionally and then painted over later in life - more unlikely scenario

I can only comment on the W113's that I have owned or seen, but on every car, the bumper brackets looked like they were painted black before they were installed on an already painted car.
