So I have two toolkits.. (230SL and 190SL)
« on: October 25, 2024, 13:47:23 »
The original owner of my car had a 190SL before it "turned to dust" (per his grandson) from his Chicago commutes, and some of the tools and miscellanea made it into my car's things. I just reorganized the two rolls and I believe I have everything 113-related in its place, and then all the leftovers are in the other kit.

Wrapped around the base of a funny period flashlight (US-made) was what appears to be a tailpipe. I'm not sure if it's for a 190SL or a 230SL. It's peculiar that he'd save just one tailpipe, but who knows. I also noticed two oil drain wrenches, the one someone had painted silver had been in with the 113 kit, and it's PN (1205810665) is very close to the one I've seen included in most kits, which is also seen here (1205810565). It seems maybe one of those was a 'special request' wrench?

The three middle wrenches in the 190SL kit are Mercedes-branded made by Matador and Dowidat, but the outer left is a Dowidat non-Mercedes branded (single head), and the largest wrench appears to have no branding at all. Also included are the hammer and what looks like some kind of trench knife or something, I do not know.. as well as a Mercedes-branded tire pressure tester and a little red-painted lightbulb.

I wouldn't mind selling or trading this 190SL kit to someone with a use for it, but is there any W113 stuff in there from what you all can see?

The chrome exhaust tip is a rare "squared end" original for a W113 !!

Huh! Well, if anyone has a second one, that would be a cool detail.

There's probably SOMEONE out there with a single unit looking for a mate. So it has some value. Maybe that someone is you! If so, keep looking for its mate...If not, well it should fetch a good buck on eBay or here...

I've never had a toolkit for my 220SE Cabriolet and wonder if anyone knows if either of the tool kits pictured would be correct for that car. Lee

Well maybe to someone, but these appear to be before the Pagoda and I don't think have anything to do with MBZ. The shank was made by Lutz File and Tool Co, and the hammer appears to be unmarked. I think the Lutz piece might even be a woodworking tool.

EDIT: WHOOPS disregard I see you're talking about the screwdriver. I just read 'wood'.

I believe the toolkit for your car is similar to the ones from the Pagoda, not the 190SL.

Forgot to mention... I found a trouble light for under the hood! It is identical to the Kaco unit in this thread: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=29341.0 but with shiny chrome and an off-white bakelite plug. Wasn't sure if these were rare or not until I happened upon that thread, since my car came with lots of bric-a-brac (like shriners badges and things).

Due to picture quality it is difficult to see descriptions and sizes. Mesko air pressure gauge is rare, but only if it has original 190SL liner, 3atm. Difficult to find is the spark plug wrench. Very difficult to find in good condition is the oil drain plug tool - the black one. Single headed Dowidats were not branded. Not sure what size you have there, should be 12mm. I thnk the very valuable item is the tool bag - it looks original and in good condition.

There were a lot of tool kits for 190SL - they were changing over time. Many tools were shared with Pontons. There is a document from, I think, Feb 1957 from Daimler listing tool kits content for various types of cars.

I am enclosing my tool kit for 1956 190SL, which is correct.

The 6mm allen wrench should be "Inbus" brand.

Yes! That is really a hen's tooth. I do not have original, still looking.... need two, for 190SL and Ponton.

ja17, if you have any of those lying around in your shop, I would be happy to help you get rid of them.
