230 SL 194 undergoing full body restoration
« on: July 25, 2005, 15:44:12 »
The body restoration of our 1964 230 SL is progressing according to the schedule. All body surgery has now been finalised and it was (as always)more comprehensive than anticipated. It got new sills and floor pans in front, new sections on lower part of rear fenders, rear wheel arch lips, some trunk floor pans, support members under trunk, structural surgery on front frame, new front transverse bar and major surgery on right side front fender, front inner fenders on both sides, plus a multitude of other smaller areas. Front suspension assembly has been totally dismantled and new rubber parts installed on front and rear axle. Both axles has been repainted in black. New front axle mountings have been installed. Front and rear axle have now been attached loosely in order to transport the Pagoda to the paint shop, where it will be further rubbed down and sand blasted in all corners and places with difficult access. While writing this it may already have been primed with zinc-chromate paint and undergone a layer-by-layer paint process, which will be finalised with top coats in MB 180 silver metallic. The hardtop has been stripped and will be rubbed down and painted MB 180 silver metallic as well. And, I'm told that we can pick up the finished Pagoda by end of August as agreed initially. If the restorer keep that dealine,it effectively took them 5 months to do the restoration. Look at the pics, so far I am satisfied with the craftman ship and the progress.

I will keep you posted with updates and the final result.

Cheers

Sure is nice to see another '64 rescued from the oxidization devils, especially with somebody else's money.  Looks like a lot of work ahead, look forward to seeing the results.  Welcome to the obsession.
