Original padding/insulation under floor mats?
« on: May 02, 2024, 16:21:58 »
Somewhat recently purchased a 68 280SL, and still learning about the car.

Recently I found that moths (!) were starting to appear, and lo and behold found them enjoy the padding/insulation that is under the floor mats.   >:(
I hadn't looked at this before, and am curious:

1. If under-floor-mat padding was original to these cars, or an owner would have added it later?

2. Regardless, I have removed the padding - it is partially disintegrated - but figure I should hang on to them after killing off the offending months (don't ask how my wife feels about the padding being in the freezer this week) as I want to keep everything that was original to the car with the car. Anyway, I was wondering if it was original, if there is "new" padding that owners use as replacement?

Thanks everyone!

Just curious, is this under carpet or rubber floor mats?

I'm asking the material of the floor mat - rubber or carpet?  I didn't know if early 280's still had rubber mats.

Ahh, gotcha. I didn’t realize there were multiple kinds of floor mats.  ::)
Mine look like carpet with some kind of coating on the back.

They probably changed mid-250SL when so many things changed.

Search this forum for "Cocomat", if you're unfamiliar with that company.

Those are original pads under the mats.  Mine are still in the car and like new...

I agree, those are original. I've had them on many Pagodas over the years.

For reference, under the drivers side their is a secondary mat below the accelerator.  Looks to be made by a company called Chadwick .

Thanks everyone. The original floor mats have a bit of a fade, but at some point an earlier owned added a couple of (Palm Fibre) Cocomats, which don't look too bad  :D

A question on Dynamat - when those are added and stuck to the floor of the vehicle, is it easily removable later (say if I want to remove it, the next owner in 50 years wants to remove it, etc.)? Or to later get it off does it involved removing paint, etc.?

I would think you could use a heat gun to remove Dynamat.
