Battery Disconnected While Running!!!!!!!
« on: July 31, 2005, 19:55:42 »
I have one of those "screw in" battery disconnectors as a theft deterent...against the best advice of many members of this forum.

Unfortunately, I was driving it tonight and it wasn't screwed in tightly and the engine stopped...the equivalent of stopping the engine by disconnecting the battery...Ugh!

What may I have messed up???

Hopefully nothing.  I was testing my rebuilt starter and I just pushed the neg lug on the battery.  Forgot to tighten it down.  Went for long ride and felt some disturbing misses.  Got back home and remembered I had not tightened the neg terminal.  I suppose the fuel pump was just burping once in a while as the connection faltered.  I hope yours just did the same.  Tightened the terminal and it is good to go.

Haynes says "Never pull off a battery lead while the engine is running as a means of stopping it"

Likewise, prior posts on this forum advise against it as well, but I can't find the implications.

It is possible to blow the diodes in the alternator by doing that.
If the alternator light shines while the engine is running then you will know you have an alternator problem and a rebuild is in order.
