Gear link bush

Hi
My new car just broke.. the automatic gear stick just moved up and down.. not engaging… called the AA but while I was waiting, crawled underneath and saw the link between stick and gear selector had separated… pushed them together and, I was able to get the car home… please look at the picture and tell me what’s missing ? Has the bush broken or does it need a new one or is pushing it together enough?

The bushing has dried and rounded out.  You should replace with new.  Relatively inexpensive.  There is one at the top also, replace them both.

And.. is the one at the top accessible from underneath or through the tunnel under the gear stick?

Yes, that's it. For the top you'll need to remove the shifter. Just a couple bolts under the carpet.

And.. do you need a special tool to fit it or can it be done by just crawling under your car with basic tools? My service manual doesn’t mention it.. it’s a Haynes ..a bit simple..

I have a special tool and it make getting the bushings in much easier but its not necessary.  Much easier to take the rod all the way out.

You have been a great help.. I did see that video from PBC.. I’ve ordered the bushes.. hoping the top one is the same as the one underneath..

for the linkage the bushing  are the same at both ends.

the easiest way to replace is to put the car in park, go underneath and disconnect the linkage from the transmisison.
then go in the car, pull up the carpet around the shifter, undo the 4 bolts and pull the whole mechanism with linkage out

replace bushings at both ends  (putting the new bushings in some hot or warm water make them easier to install)

install in reverse order

I started to lift the carpet… in doing so I discovered that it looks like it has never been done before..bushes on order…
