Clutch replacement 230 and 250sl
« on: March 29, 2023, 22:57:10 »
Hi guys, I was thinking about the next winter work for my car and will be the inspection of the clutch . I’ve already asked this before but I didn’t find a  clear answer . The 230 and 250 have the same pressure plate and probably the same release bearing , the 280 has a different pressure plate and bearing .
Due to the fact that the old style pressure plate for 230 and 250 is NLA , I would like to know what is the best option : buying a refurbished old style plate or it’s possible to put the 280 type which is easy to find and cheaper ?
In this case you will have to buy a different type bearing too. As you can see the replacement for a 230 and 250 is quite more complicated because of the lack of parts and the uncertainty of the correct part too.
Last thing is about the flywheel . It is recommended to replace as well ? Is very expensive and from my experience the should last almost forever . Have you had any recent replacement of the clutch in your 230 and 250 ? Thank you

It very much depends on how bad your clutch friction plate was worn, but we always refinish the flywheel when replacing the clutch.

I had good luck with Sachs S2D150 clutch kit but reused my 230 throwout bearing (was in good shape). So the newer style pressure plate on a resurfaced flywheel with the old style throwout bearing was able to work in my sititation and was very affordable.

Did you only resurface the flywheel or replaced ? Do you have some pictures of this set up ?

Just resurface the flywheel, no need to replace unless it's not within spec. I don't have any photos but I could try and find more part numbers with my receipts if needed.

Hi guys , it's been long time but i've always had the same doubt . As you know the pressure plate from 230 and 250 is the different that the 280sl type. Since the 230 and 250 type is nla or only available in exchange , i was wondering if you can use the modern type for the 280sl. I guess you have to put a different type trow out bearing . This question is maybe directed to 250sl and 230sl owners who have recently replaced their clutch. If some of them have the 5speed zf gearbox like mine , would be even better . Any help is appreciated because sooner or later i will have to replace my clutch as well.
