Horn Pad for Ivory Steering Wheel
« on: March 25, 2005, 06:41:23 »
I had inquired on this topic up month ago as I was interested in what the "correct" color was for the material in my horn pad. Mine was brown and worst of all, the vinyl had a nice gash in it. Some group members responded that the material would match the ashtray cover and window winder inserts (so brown would seem to be correct in my case) while others felt that the ONLY color for an ivory wheeled car would be ivory.

In the interest in helping a forum that has helped me quite a bit in 2 short months of ownership (okay I also needed a new pad), I purchased a horn pad on ebay in order to disect mine. I popped off the chrome ring and voila!...ivory colored material beneath it. I would imagine that the ivory vinyl must turn brown over time.

Bob,

I know they're available in the 280 SL style, but what about the earlier style?

Hello Doug and Bob,

Yes, I believe they are both still available from DaimlerChrysler but have become a little pricey lately. Times are gone where they were available for 20 - 40 German marks (10 - 20 $$). :(

Bob, if you really want to head for perfect new look you have to get one of these. If you were aficionado (like Doug and me ;)  :D ) you had to look for an old one - probably for one which is as good as possible.
Because the downside is that the original ones from the sixties look both (230 & 280 style, or let's better say: W110 and W115 styple)different from the newly available ones. A connoisseur realises (and gets angry on) the differences :x : different grain of the horn pad (the older surfaces are much smoother and more softly padded) and the older ones have an additional chrome ring surrounding the star.

Good luck ! ;)

I recovered mine using a piece of new

Depending on how 'brown' the pad has gone, there's another option.  Mine was quite brown and yes, after popping the ring out, it was ivory on the edge. I soaked my in household bleach overnight and it's also as good as new! Only a slight difference left between the rest of the pad and the rim beneath the chrome ring.
