Matching numbers
« on: September 13, 2005, 12:22:51 »
I know it's been on the forum more than once. But does someone happens to have clear pics of the places where to look for those numbers. The hood I found, the softtopcover no, the one on the transmissioncover no and the one on the hardtop, no. Do I miss another place to look? You can mail them to me or maybe it's interesting enough to show it to us all. Also where can I find the bodynumber on my datacard? Thanks.

Hi Pablo. I think because mine is an early car, things are slightly different than yours but here's how mine stacks up:

On the data card, mine is in the #18 box -- entitled AufBau Nummer.

On the car, the full number can be found on a screwed on plate on the door jam and stamped on the metal shield near the washer bag. The last three digits can also be found on the upper driver's side corner of the open hood (bonnet), the upper most driver's side corner of the soft-top lid (when open), and on the hard top -- on the back underside near the center. (you can only see this when hardtop is off -- either upright or upside down...)

I cannot verify the transmission plate number as I've never seen that one.

Pablo:

My 280SL is an early 1968.

I could not find the ID nos.on the hard top or soft either.

I did find the tag on the transmission. See attached photo.

The number below the 280SE should be the same as the one on your data card box 11. Cheers.

Paul,

Go to motoringinvestments.com and look at the pix of Ed Cave's gorgeous white-grey 280 SL being restored. It shows where most of those numbers are located. Great reference material.
