Best Oil for '69 280sl
« on: September 24, 2005, 13:09:07 »
What is the best oil (non synth) to put in my 280sl.  It is a rebuilt engine.  Please provide brand and weight.  The local dealership just put in 15-40.  It seems to like it.

I think the dealer got it right, why do you want to switch from synthetic?

Hey Fat Boy (your moniker not mine!)

I believe far more important then brand of oil (Valvoline, Castrol) and type of oil (Synthetic, regular, or blended) and even weight of oil (15W50, 10W40, 5W40) is regular changing of oil and filter.

I think for most of our cars the rules don't apply since they don't get the use that was intended at the time of sale.  If you store your cars in winter, and then put 2,500 miles a year on your car "in season", for certain you need a fresh oil change and filter at the beginning of each season.  If you do more than that, say 5K mile a year, then you'll need the same with an interim change.

If your car is a daily driver and you put 12,000 miles a year on it, and use it in the winter, then the "W" designation comes into play as does more frequent oil changes.

After listening to a Mobil 1 presentation last year at Starfest I had to believe what they are saying about synthetic versus standard.  I have used it since then.  Others seem to think they develop additional leaks more frequently when they switched to Mobil 1, but I have not.  My mechanic doesn't believe it either.  A leak is caused by a weakness or failure of a gasket or seal.  If your gaskets/seals are in good condition, they'll hold.  I have no leaks, my undercarriage is as dry as a bone in the desert.

VERY IMPORTANT: if you have not heard Joe A's presentations on oil changes, you may not be aware of this little rubber seal found at the top of the filter housing mounting base.  More often then not, these seals are LEFT OUT since many don't know about them.  If the seal is left out, you are not filtering oil.  I can't tell you how many members of this group have discovered this, but it is quite a few and I'm among them.

And in the bottom of the oil filter there are also two rubber seals hidden underneath a metal cap. Mine had never been changed and had become hard. You may want to look at it. MB P/N 000 184 32 80 and 000 184 17 80

Please take the advice about the top seal seriously.  Don't wait until your next oil change.  Don't risk it.  For the cost of an oil change, check this now.  First order the upper seal for the oil filter, it is a rubber piece about 1/2" long and looks like a small piece of garden hose.  It will set you back maybe 2 bucks from the dealer.  I'll bet you an oil change that it is not there now, and operating your sl without it is like driving without a filter.  This was just one of the many pieces of invaluable advice I got from members of this board that saved my newbie butt.  The other item that is an almost sure bet to need attention is the tachometer gear bushing, if you search the site you will find all you need on this topic.  It is another weak point that is cheap and easy to fix but, if left unattended, has huge $ consequences if it fails (read oil pump failure).

Best,

Of course if you had a real name, we could call you that.

BTW you will probably need the part number for the seal on top of the filter that everybody has warned could be missing.

Hello mrfatboy,
Most experts feel synthetics are superior these days. However lets face it, today's oils mineral oils are much better than oils 35 years ago when these cars were new. Use recommended viscosity for your climate.

Everyone should consider changing their oil BEFORE they put the car in storage for the winter. Dirty inactive oil will form sludge in the bottom of the oil pan and contaminants from combustion (acids and moisture) will be working on you engine while in storage over the winter!
