Help with how/where to sell my 68 250SL
« on: April 23, 2012, 02:10:06 »
I am a long time "lurker" and 31 year owner of this old girl, the time has come for it brighten the life of a new loving owner.

I have never sold a car so I have no clue as to the best approach and would appreciate any suggestions.

The car is in San Francisco, I am the second owner and it was originally purchased from the Beverly Hills dealership.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan,

It must be a sad day that you are going to sell, however, to put it in the "for sale" area on the forum you need to be a financial member.  That costs $30 and possibly a cheap cost to put an advertisement here on the site. Whilst most of us already have our Pagodas there are those who would happily consider a second one and there are lots of members both financial and regular who do not have Pagodas but watching for the dat that they make the jump.

I am sure others will chime in on other areas that a US member could advertise their car for sale.

Roy at MercedesHeritage is a great resource; so is John Olson at SL Market Letter in Minneapolis, and Brian Peters of Motoring Investments in San Diego.  Don't forget listing it here in the for sale section here, and MBCA Star Magazine listings, and Hemmings...  Have a good idea of its honest condition, value and what you want for it--be prepared for lots of questions and ensure you have a good set of detailed photos and be ready to take more.

Some weeks ago I put some people in touch with a friend here in Ann Arbor--car sold in 2 weeks.

Hi Dan,

All the previous suggestions are good sources.  I would also check out Bring a Trailer.  It is a very interesting car enthusiast website that sends out a daily e-mail of cars it's membership has found for sale from a variety of sources.  It has quite a following, last week Jay Leno was showcased having purchased a car from the daily e-mail. The other thing I like about the site is it allows readers to comment on the featured cars and everyone is pretty knowledgeable and fair.  Check it out link below.
