engine mount upgrade report

Hey Group,

I had the front engine mounts replaced last Tuesday and also the auto transmission adjusted.
I chose to use after-market because genuine MB was too expensive at AUD $500.62 a pair.
I sprayed the existing engine mounts with WD40 about a week before having the job done. The mechanic said the bolts came out very easily.
 
Now when I hit a bump, the metallic clunking in the front has gone.

Also the air filter housing and the inlet manifold now line up instead of being misaligned by about 2.5 cm.

He also said that although he adjusted the modulator pressure in the transmission and smoothed it out a lot, the CLUNK will not go away until I have the rear axle rubbers and differential-to-body rubber replaced.

So you know what my next project will be. One job at a time allows me to monitor the improvements in my car.
Every little replacement and refinement brings my car back to its original form.

I love the way it is now driving, but I am looking forward to the future.

This is part of the fun - seeing the car improve with each repair, when you weren't dissatisfied to begin with. The only problem is that very few of us really know how these cars are supposed to drive when everything is in perfect / like new condition. So drive as many different ones as you can, because probably every car has at least something that is better than on your own car.

I've got to do the same job on my 1971 280 SL - that is, replace the 2 front engine motor mounts. I haven't begun the parts search yet. I was wondering ifyou would share with me who you purchasedthe after market mounts from and what I might expect to pay for the same?

Hey Blair,
I am in Australia. The MB service agent has a supplier of after market parts they use. When I started to ask about the MB original parts I was told they would cost $500.62 for a pair of engine mounts to be imported from Germany. The after market mounts were $50.00 each, plus installation.

If you use the PC for your research like I do, you will find on eBay USA there are a number of suppliers who regularly sell them.

Super, thanx Bob. When I saw your initial post suggesting $500.00+ for the MB mounts I was flabber-gast. $50.00/ea sounds more reasonable. I'll search eBay, and other suppliers in the U.S. as well. Thanx for taking the time to clue me in.

For your information:

The current MB part numbers for the original engine mounts are:

Front (2 mounts kit): 110 220 02 17 (for all W113 except for 230 SL up to engine 000537 -manual- and 000005 -automatic-). Price: 138.53 euros (around 160 US Dollars) for both.

Rear (1 mount kit): 113 240 00 18 (for all W113). Price: 47.08 euros (around 54 US Dollars)

Notes:
- These mounts kits also include some plates, bolts, washers, etc.
- These prices are from MB dealers in Germany or the MB Classic Center. In MB dealers of other countries could be slightly higher (for instance: around 10-15% in Spain)

With these part numbers, you can easily ask the price in your local MB dealer.

Engine mounts are not too hard to replace and (in the USA) are not too expensive from the MB dealer.

Albert, Do you have the engine mounts part number for the early 230SL?
My engine number ends 000195.

Hi Paul,

I guess your 230 SL is manual gearbox, isn't it?
If so, I will check the part number in my big "230 SL Spare Parts Book" -at home-. I took the other part numbers from the "Original-Teilekatalog Baumuster W113" (Ref. L6510 00 0004), a summarized spare parts book with current part numbers and prices in MB -no engine parts-. As the mounts for your early 230 SL are not in that summarized book, I'm afraid they could be difficult to find in MB.

Albert, Yes my '63 230Sl has the manual gearbox. My mounts are in good shape. Just wanted the part no. for future reference.

Hi Paul,

According to my "MB 230 SL Spare Parts List Edition C", the whole front engine supports were different from engine 000537 (manual) and 000005 (automatic). The early parts (127 223 07 04 and 127 223 06 04)were replaced by the next supports (127 223 12 04 and 127 223 11 04) together with some screws, check nuts, and washers. The early rubber mountings were also replaced, but the next ones (part number 180 223 10 12) seems to work with both types of engine support.

That part number 180 223 10 12 (up to chassis 012864) is for only one front rubber mount. The current MB part number (110 220 0217) is a kit with the two front rubber mounts together with two spring washers, two head screws and two rubber buffers.
