Painting vinyl seats

The centre part of my driver's seat vinyl (the basket weave part) has a hole in it. I need a piece of navy fabric but my upholsterer can only get black. I am aware of how difficult it is to get these materials. Has anybody tried vinyl paint on a vinyl seat base? I understand some paints are able to penetrate the fabric and so be more durable. I'm not looking for perfection but it will need to be reasonably good. Can anybody recommend a suitable paint and provide any tips on doing the job? Should I be able to get a good colour match with the rest of the seat?
Another option I've been given is to replace the basket weave sections of both seats with a similar-looking leather.

An easy job. Leatherique makes a very good dye (leatherique.com). There are also lots of other comparable dyes suitable for your job, so this is not a unique product by any means.

I think you'll find vinyl to be a much better candidate for your task than leather. It's more durable in the long run. You'll also probably want to do both seats in their entirety just for uniformity.
