Metallic paint
« on: October 20, 2005, 16:13:08 »
I see on a site that has paint chip samples that the name for my paint code (173) is "Anthracite Grey Metallic";  it's hard to tell from the small sample they show what the exact color is.  The car's been in the family since 1971 and it never had the look of what I consider to be a "metallic" paint (i.e., a "metalflake " or similar effect); it always appeared as a very dark grey. Is this just a name that M/B used back in 1970 for a color that really wasn't a true metallic paint? Thanks!

Am I safe in assuming that the use of the word "metallic" in conjunction with code 173 does not mean that the paint will have (for want of a better word) a sparkle effect to it?  After 31 years with the car, I'm not looking for any surprises. Thanks for the input.

I don't understand your question.. metallic does not go in conjunction with code 173.
All my Data shows 173 as a non metallic paint , whereas metallic shows in conjuntion , as you put it, with code 172..

Where are you getting this info?

Google got me to a site called "Paintscratch.com" that has code DB173 as "Anthracite Grey Metallic"; they list DB172 as "Anthracite Grey Metallic Clearcoat". This is what got me thrown off; based upon what I'm learning here, they must be in error.  Thank you for your input.

Fortunately, IMO, metallic paints of that era coming out of Germany were not what we would consider "metal flake" or real "sparkly". My 1973 911 is Gold Metallic and few people today would look at it and think of it as a metallic paint. You have to look very closely to see the 'metallic' and even then it is wonderfully subtle.
