shift boot replacement

Any tips for replacing a new shift boot on a manual transmission? Do I need to pull the carpet up? It's not clued down. Or can I just replace it from the top. Do I need clue or anything or does it just snap in?

It's not hard to do. I replaced mine when replacing the shift lever and interior bushings. I didn't pull up the carpet but the boot was glued to the carpet. Just pull it up and glue the new one in. Others may be different.

Obviously the shift knob needs to be removed to slide the new shift boot on. The shift knob is only held on by friction. I have removed mine by placing a pair of pliers around the shaft beneath the knob and tapping the knob lightly with a hammer. Be prepared to catch the knob. Mine flew off the shaft.
