Proformace Cam & Head for 113 (Sport Cam)
« on: October 03, 2005, 07:34:54 »
Some one in centdral USA had regound the cam and changed the head on the W113 slighly to give real upgrade in proformance. Does any one have any leads who this person might be? Or the number for the lobe chane? This is more of a racing style and make the W113 real move out with gusto. Some times called a sport cam!

Hello Ron,

You would have to be careful if you do a performance grind on the camshaft.  These camshafts are "case hardened" from the factory. If they are simply reground, without being hardened, they do not last. As far as the head, raising the compression could require very high octane fuel not readily available in the US.

Performance upgrades like porting and polishing the head, extrude honeing the intake manifold, making sure you have the best factory camshaft and possibly re-metering the injection pump for max power, would give you better performance and not hurt the durability.

Pete Lesler and Frank Cozza have both competed in their 280SLs and probably have a lot of tips.

Joe;
My idea was with more of the sport cam as in the older 300SL. I would be looking to have a new cam ground if the specs were available.
There must be something out there, just need to find it!

Thanks

The late Frank Mallory was someone who had done this. He was going to tell me how but it never happened before he died. He did tell me some things though..

The early 280 and 250 cams are the same and are fairly mild even though the heads actually flow quite well even in stock trim. Any porting and polishing should add something if it's done right.
The 230SL is the best cam and is very similar to the euro 280SL cam as far as timing goes. I used this in the Red Rocket with an ofset woodruff key to advance the cam to euro specs. There's a lot more to it than this but it's a secret.

Benz Dr.

I noticed in your post you said the 250 cam is the same as the early 280 cam.  Does that mean that the 250 euro cam is the same as the 280 euro cam, or that all the cams euro and US are the same.  Thanks for your help.
