Backfiring

Hi Guys - new to this site and wanted to know if any of you can help. My 1968 280SL backfires a lot, even when warmed up. Do any of you have the same problem? The garage says that I need an engine rebuild???? Does he really mean that? Thanks

That seems to be a big jump from engine backfires to needs engine rebuild... What else did garage say about the engine condition?

Hey Fah1978,
Back firing often means that the car is running too lean. This usually can be adjusted.

Use the Search function on here and look for 'backfire'. This has been discussed many times.

I would not be rushing into a rebuild until I had really done my home work.

Could be dozens of different things, but I would start with a compression test before anything...just so you know what you are working with.
 And Read the plugs while you are out [ and numbered] .. they tell a ton...

Hello,
As Bob mentioned if the car backfires or coughs through the intake it is probably running too lean.

Improper ignition timing can cause backfiring also.
