Bumper Guards 66 230SL
« on: November 25, 2005, 12:16:22 »
I recently purchased a 1966 230SL, all original with 68,000 miles on it. It is in outstanding condition. But I have seen several pictures of 66's with front and rear bumper guards. Does anyone know where I can purchase some new ones to put on my car? I love this car and an looking at showing it this next year. Thanks for any help on this.

Ted,

If you plan to show the car,  then don't put on the guards. Some of the US-spec 230 SLs came with awful huge bumper guards, but most did not. If you've seen the prettier chromed 280 SL guards on a 230 SL, then it was added later and, technically speaking, would not be "correct."

Run a search on bumper guards in the forums. You'll see pix of both examples.

Ted:
Nothing ruins the styling of a Pagoda then the mack truck ram gards supplied by Mercedes-Benz in the early 1960 up till 1969. They really look out of place. If you must have bumper protection I recomment the later chrome guards with the rubber inserts.
For my tast I am looking to replace my bumpers front and rear with out the bumper guards since that is the way it was delivered new in 1968. Why hide such a pretty grill design and a set of nice european Headlights this car is too beautifull to hide its true feathers.
