Help with build card translation?

Hello to All - -

I have managed to translate all but TWO of the entries on the build card for my 230SL. Can anyone tell me what the two unnumbered (and indecipherable) blocks  below the option codes (723,226,227, 229)  designate?  Regards, Larry in CA

i dont know. a search usually gives it. or douglas will.

it seems pretty cool that your card has handwritten numbers on it. mine was all typed.

I wish I could help, but I'm not familiar enough with the 230 SL datacards to comment on those specific fields. The format of the card is different from the 280 SL-style datacard.

Hey Lurtch. My copy is not much more legible. However, I think I can make out the first part of the first word on mine: it looks like ZulassungsXXXXXX. Best I can translate is "permission" of some sort? What would help is if somebody has the actual datacard (versus a facsimile)....

From the original data card it says  Zulassungsdatum  and the Next box is  Olmarke.  Sorry I can't help with translation.

Zulassungsdatum = the date when the car is first registered by Government authorities, e.g., Dept. of Motor Vehicles in the USA.

Ölmarke = literal translation is "oil brand name". But could it be the recommended viscosity? I have no clue why this was necessary or desirable to be known; perhaps one of the group's historians can enlighten us.

Alfred is correct on the meaning of the terms.  My Zulassungsdatum is also blank, but presumably for any car it would normally be within a day or two of the Übernahmetag (delivery date) shown on the lower left of the card.

PS keep your notes, you can get extra credit in your next German class!

PSS -- in comparing mine and your card, there seem to be a few differences. My 22 appears to be scheibenwascher? with Bosch in the box. Maybe the washerpump? Also, my upper Fg. Nr (chassis #) is in a different location. Also interesting is your right and left axles have same number -- mine are xxx217 and xxx182. All in all very helpful!

That's Koffer- und Handschuhkastenschloß.  The "ß" character is essentially equivalent to "ss".  Your translation is correct, though.

Incidentally, the German special characters can be entered on a PC by turning NumLock on, then holding down the Alt key and typing on the number keypad on the right:

     0220     Ü
     0223     ß

James, you are lucky, at least you got a Scheibenwascher  :)  .. I just have an R (whatever that is?) in #22. But  mine also drives on two different left and right front axles. See:

A question for someone who knows a lot more about 113s than I do (which is almost everybody):

Were the chassis numbers sequential with just the transmission identification number changing dependent on whether the car had a manual transmission (#10) or an automatic (#12)?  

I was looking at Larry's data card and noticed that my chassis number was just after his although mine has a manual.  See below (information supplied from MBUSA, including translation):

I have several datacards, some originals and most copies or faxes.  I often see the date of production being done with a rubber stamp.  This stamping is not seen on any of yours listed here.  I'll scan one tonight and you can see.

James, if you look at the databack picture, you can see that #22 is the windshield washer setup.  Bosch made the wipers blades and holders.  I have never seen an SL with the headlight glass washers, eventhough I've seen them on the W108 and W109 series alongside the W113's.

Ken, I find it interesting that yours came with the black top option. My colors are identical (717-332-115 MB-tex) but with the 723 navy blue top.

Wonder if it was a request from original buyer or they built x amount with blue and x amount with black....?

Interestingly enough, the chassis numbers were sequential independent of transmission type, but the engine numbers were not. Engine numbers were separately started at 000001 depending on transmission.
