Lucky travels...
« on: December 18, 2005, 16:47:54 »
As many of you will have noticed, there have been some problems recently with our site. I thought I had it all under control earlier this month, when on the 8th of december I made uploading of images to the old site impossible.

I then synchronised the new site from the old site, so that they were identical. And then on the night of the 10th, the hosting provider switched to the new site. All accesses to http://www.sl113.org were redirected to a new computer. And I enabled uploads again.

On the 14th I was alerted to this post index.php?topic=4550]http://index.php?topic=4550 about uploading images, and I spotted that I had made a mistake in configuration of the security settings for the new site so that uploads were impossible.

When I spotted this I was in Boston, on a business trip. Luckily I had my draft -webmeister- handbook with me so I had my login codes and I could fix the problem. I did this and updated my post.

I flew on to Tampa on the 15th (but I did not forget to eat a typical New England Lobster pot, which I have to do everytime I'm there). I was very busy there, and could not connect to the site or my private e-mail. On the 16th I was due to fly back to the Netherlands via JFK. I was very worried I might not make it as bad weather --snow storms-- were forecast for JFK earlier that week.

However, I got to Tampa airport with plenty of time to spare. The weather above NY was fine. I checked in, and entered the Delta lounge. Regrettably the lounge Wifi was unreliable so I did not bother accessing the site or reading my private e-mails, dedicating my attention to a couple of martini's instead.

About an hour before the flight, Delta / Song announced a two hour delay in the departure time. It dawned on me that that meant I was going to miss my connecting flight to Amsterdam from JFK. As a result I missed a large Christmas party for which I was meant to be the Master of Ceremonies, and could not access the internet for a couple of days (the hotel Delta put us up in was not much... and then I went into New York City rather than hanging around an airport hotel or terminal 4 at JFK. I enjoyed myself at MoMa for 5 hours, and then walked about 5th avenue -- which was so crowded with Christmas shoppers, Saks window gazers and Rockefeller center Ice-skate watchers).

Anyway, upon my return home, 27 hours late and dead tired, I just read the e-mails and found that all the changes I made were useless.

On the night of the 16th of December, our hosting providers switched off the old site. However, prior to doing that they were so considerate as to load all the files of the old site on the new site. Regrettably that means that all picture files uploaded between the 10th and the 16th of December are lost, because they went to the new site. Please reference the post URL above as to how to fix it if you uploaded pictures in that period.

There may be further hidden bugs. If you encounter one, please let me know. I'll try and resolve them ASAP.

Thank you

Peter

Peter,

Next time, please look me up in New York. You're always welcome at my home.

Thanks for all your efforts on this site. It's a lot of fun and a genuine "community."

Peter,
I agree with Douglas and Alfred that you have been doing a lions share of keeping us all happy.
If you are by any chance in the Washington DC area, look me up and I will give you a tour and let you stay at my place for a while.

Peter, You are doing a wonderful job! My e-mail was only to alert you to a bug when you switched to the new site. Bugs are a part of programming. Thank you very much, and as you can see, my signature works again. If your travels get you to Seattle, please give me a call or e-mail. You can stay at our house. Merry Christmas!

Dear all,

first of all, thanks for all your wonderful offers. I'll be collecting your addresses soon though private e-mail to store them in my modern-day equivalent little black book  :) . Should I ever have unscheduled stop-overs in Seattle (I'm there once in a blue moon), Washington (last time I was there was 2001) or NY (last there... this Saturday) I'll be sure to come over and have a look at your cars and garage, and drink a glass of wine with you, and talk about driving, SL's and other great things.

Sure beats loitering with intent through a museum, although I have to admit I enjoyed the Museum of Modern Art very much. But meeting friends is always better.

Secondly: it is a matter of professional pride to keep this site up and running as best I can. It is not a hassle, except that I hate it when something unexpected happens. That's why I try and inform you as honestly as possible on what is preventing things from working, why it happens, and what I am doing about it.

Furthermore, I am documenting all of this in a Webmeister handbook so that ultimately I can share the duties with others so that we can all enjoy uninterrupted service of our favourite site... even if I'm stuck at an airport someday.

What is really telling however is how many people really rely on the information here, and find it important that this site works. It is just a great testimony to the value of the contributions of all you and the sense of community that this site creates.

Peter

Thanks, Peter!  Sounds like you had an interesting last few days!  I expect that I speak for many of us when I say that we all appreciate your efforts to make this site as user friendly and bug free as it usually is.  That said, we certainly understand that glitches happen occasionally.

Will migrating to the new server make it possible to post slightly larger image files sometime soon?  ;^)
