Light Weight Disk Wheels
« on: August 28, 2005, 16:05:41 »
At Blacklick, I showed and discussed aluminum disk wheels that could replace wheels on cars with hubcaps.  I found some more information on them. The 6J 14 H2 wheel was used on 1977-81 280E and 300D automobiles.   The part number is 123 400 15 02.

I have these exact same wheels on my car.  There's quite a difference in weight compared to the original steel wheels.

Yes, b/c they do not have the 3 little dimples to hold the small hub caps.

And the ones I've seen (that are standard on the 123s) are a lighter gage steel, not ali.

Naj .... I believe that these were used only on the USA delivered automobiles.  They are "Light Alloy Rims" (aluminum) (page 40.5 102/8 of the 123 book).  They will not hold the small hubcaps without adding the clips from the 190SL wheels (a number of 190SL guys have done that:

Naj, I can confirm that these are in fact alloy.  As mentioned before I have the same exact wheels on my car.  In fact I had posted this information in a prior post (14 july 2004)in the photo gallery entitled "Photos from Hauser" courtesy of Cees Klumper.

Jim:
I called Caliber motors so I can run the part number for the light wheels 123 400 15 02 for a price on a 208-E from 1977 to 81. I am told that part number does not exsist in the USA books is this an option for European cars only? The only two rims availible for the 280-E are steel or alloy mag. Can you comment on this and were I can fine these wheels?

Bob, I seriously doubt you'll find these from a dealer.  Your best chances are a MB dismantler.  My wheels came from a 1980 300D US version.  I'm not sure if these wheels were offered in Europe.

These wheels are shown in the wheel section of the W123 chassis manual.  My 240D had the 5.5" aluminum versions.  However, they are no longer supplied by M-B.  Ordering the part number for an alloy wheel will get you a steel wheel (several tries to figure this out).  When I needed a replacement, I finally obtained a used one from Potomac German Auto.  The 5.5" ones were fairly easy to get then (1999 I think).  The 6" versions are less plentiful.  They are distinguished from the steel wheels by the silver band on the "hump" outside the bolt circle.  The 5.5" versions have 4 silver "stripes" rather than a continuous band.

Arjun,

Yes, the 5 1/2 inch rims work on our cars.  I switched back to these last fall and they are currently on my gold car.

Best,

Got my hands on the following.

The wheels are stamped 1234991302 Lemme and 5 1/2J x 14 H2.

These have come from a 82 240D.
