Fuel Injection update

Are there any options available to upgrade the mechanical fuel injection system to an electronic fuel injection where the exhaust gases can be measured and monitored as is available in newer cars?  I think there would be significant takers if such as replacement could be developed.

Any thoughts?

Well since you are going ton significantly modify the current set up, thereby affecting the originality of the vehicle, I would suggest an easier way would be to replace the entire motor with a later straight 6 Merc unit !

Installing an aftermarket digital engine management system would not be too hard.  It would cost $2-3K.  The only hard part would be mounting the bungs for the injectors, building a fuel rail, installing magnets on the front pulley for the crank sensor, finding a place to install a knock sensor, mounting a MAP sensor, welding a bung for the O2 sensor and mounting a couple of temperature sensors in the air stream and the engine coolant.  

All of this would provide very little improvement over a well performing mechanical injection system.

 If one did go that route,  putting a 104 HFM/SFI in a 113 would be a
 great engine with nice power..227HP..

What would that engine be out of and would it fit?
Problem with most candidates is the front axle and oil pan fit...correct?
I've wondered about the 201 chassis 2.6's is that the 104 you're referring to?
It would be nice to not get blown away by Civic's and Corolla's  :D

 Yes , the 104 would be the last IL-6 Benz engine before they went to V6.
 The 104 came in both 2/8 and 3.2l .  The E class had the 3.2 and the late 104s were HFM/SFI , full electronic FI with both variable valve timing and dual cam /36 valve.  They also had  variable intake runner
length, so they really scream. DIS /coil-over waste spark ingition too.. no distributors.
 A friend measured one up and they seem to have a good fit  as they are low profile.  The 94/95 versions had the 4 speed auto with first gear start and they were very capable pushing 2:65 differentail gears, so one in a 113 with the 722 auto and 3:27 from a 10/ 4.5 would make quite the little 113 .. sure would be a fun/fast car..........with nice top end ans hole shot power to spare....

I have the 104 engine in my 94 E320 coupe and it's quick, I think the engine was also used in the SL320 from 1990 or so and available with a 5 speed auto or 5 speed manual. My SL and coupe are sitting next to each other in the garage, Ill take some mearsurements over the weekend 8)

104 was used in E ,S . Sl, and even the late C class... but the early 104 was not HFM/SFI... and the SFI is the one that has all the power ..
SFI engine management is very cool tech...............

Early SL/104 was dist ignition and fuel distribtor EHA systems.
 C class was 2.8 displacement.
 E class was HFM/SFI [ actually started in '93/300E.. but known as E320 in 94/95 chassis 124.032]
 Then the later SL/104 went to Motronic management , but still the same DIS/ MAF controlled engine.
 The main changes were engine management... C and SL/S class went to OBD2 Digital format in '94, while the E class remained OBD1 [ Flash  Analog DM code system] thru '95.
All "96 and on were then Motronic w/OBD2 .
 The S class 140 chassis was  actually  the last  production run w/104..

 One thing that would be cool about having a 104 HFM/SFI from an E320
as a power plant for a 113 is it would come with the engine management Flash Code Analog Diagnostics module [DM] with the built-in LED/SW code retrieval system ...so you could access any fuel/ignition management diagnostics of your engine with the push of a button for code retrieval..Now, THAT would be cool..

 This is just fancy pants tech talk, as I like the MFI system just fine , now that I finally know how to tweak it...

 ..but , just for the sake of engine tech talk, here is the DM diagnostics that were available with the 104 engine management format that we use over at Mercedesshop Forum to aid members in SFI electronic diagnostics.....quite a change from our diagnostics over here, but just as interesting..sometimes more so..
