List of abbreviations
« on: February 26, 2012, 06:24:50 »
Over the years, we have managed to introduce a couple of terms, abbreviations and other terms that may be challenging to newcomers or those otherwise not in the know. Here is a list to help with the translation:

BBB - Big Blue Book - which still does not really help, but it's the original shop manual. Term was coined by David Pease
WRD - Warm Running Device - widget on top of the fuel injection pump that impacts the cold idle mixture
CSS - Constant Speed Solenoid - magnetic device that raises idle rpm for auto/AC cars
MBCA - Mercedes Benz Club of America
PUB - Pagoda University Blacklick
JA17 - Joe, AKA Joe Alexander (resident in Blacklick)
AKA - Also Known As
The Other Joe - any Joe other than JA17
Benz Dr - Dan Caron, AKA 'The Docter' or 'Benz Barn', up north in Canada
BST - Brass springy thing - radio-grounding interference thing at the top of the hood/bonnet latch
FSVT - Funnel shaped vent thing -  the fuel overflow from the fuel expansion canister, by the rear of the car near the exhaust.
Flower Pot - the plastic fuel pickup and return compartment inside the fuel tank (used with permission from Benz Dr)
LSD - limited slip differential - rear axle that contains a system of clutches that makes both wheels drive rather than one side that spins while the opposite side that grabs.
RHD - wrong (right) hand drive
FIP - fuel injection pump
CD - capacitive discharge ignition - points and coil ignition, with a transistorized ignition box that stores a charge that is released when the points open. Commonly used in late 60's to earlly 70's.
WD - wharehouse distributor - only dealers or service stations can buy from them. Not available to the general public.
POS - don't ask! (but, if you must know: Piece of ^%$#)
PO - Previous Owner
TTS - thermal time switch
NOS - new old stock (sometimes used loosely)
OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer
SWAG - Swinging Wild Ass Guess
NLA - No Longer Available

BST-Brass springy thing?  That radio-grounding interference thing at the top of the hood/bonnet latch
FST-Funnel shaped thing; the fuel overflow from the fuel expansion canister, by the rear of the car near the exhaust.

Why limit this to just abbreviations/acronyms? Newbies might not understand:

Flower Pot-the plastic fuel pickup and return compartment inside the fuel tank.

I am afraid I have to correct one -- it should read FSVT...  :) Funnel-Shaped Vent Thing!

Of course, I know this because I was the terminology-challenged one who first asked about these in about 2003 ....   ::)

To this day, I can't think of a better description! but at least my car once again has one...

Thanks for the update, but JUST FOR THE RECORD, mine is NOT funnel shaped--indicating replacement with a piece of steel fuel tubing during the restoration and not original...

For those that really don't get it, "Don't Ask" isn't descriptive enough..

POS=Piece of ^%$#

NOW they all get it.... ;)

About twenty years ago, one of my employees, a "balsy" engineer at Chrysler, made a wonderful technical presentation to our department, which was attended by our Engineering Vice President.  He inserted an acronym into the presentation, thnking no-one would have the courage to ask what it meant in the presence of the Vice-President.  Unfortunately the Vice President had no fear of appearing ignorant, so he asked what it meant.  My engineer turned red and had no choice but to admit that ANA meant, "Another New Acronym".

I think by definition an Acromyn has to be "pronounceable" so "PUB" would be an acronym but "OEM" woudn't be (unless you do yoga). Better examples of acronyms are "OPEC", "NATO" and even "SCUBA".

Thanks Kevin for that ... But Bob did not claim that OEM was an acronym, he posted it as an abbreviation I believe  :)

Couldn't agree with you more Wallace.

That abbreviation is usually associated with that sinking feeling you get in your stomach followed by disappointment...  :(
